We can say say that advice and commonsense solutions are focus on “first-order” causes. Meaningful psychotherapy addresses 2nd and 3rd (and Nth) order causes

A tragic flaw in undergraduate academic psychology, which I’ve only come realize since going into private practice, is denial of the widespread & increasing demand for psychodynamic psychotherapy. Academic psychology’s portrayal of the landscape in real world clinical psychology is deceptive & therefore obviously a disservice to undergraduate psychology students.
