Imagine picking up a rose petal that had just fallen from the sky…

and seeing a tiny image of Jesus on it.

That is what people said happened in the Philippines in 1948.

At a Carmelite monastery in Lipa, Batangas, rose petals reportedly began appearing and falling around the monastery.

But people quickly noticed something even stranger.

Some of the petals seemed to carry tiny sacred images.

Jesus.
Mary.
The Holy Family.
Saints.
Even scenes connected to the Crucifixion.

And people wanted to know where they were coming from.

This was happening while 21-year-old Carmelite postulant Teresita Castillo said she was experiencing apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

She said the woman later identified herself as “Mary, Mediatrix of All Grace.”

But Teresita was not the only person connected to the strange events.

Nuns, pilgrims, and other visitors reported seeing the petals.

Some witnesses said they watched petals flutter down from above. One account even describes them falling despite wind and rain.

So people rushed to collect them.

And some of the petals they picked up reportedly had religious images on them.

That made the mystery spread far beyond the monastery.

Crowds came to Lipa, newspapers covered the story, and the petals were passed from person to person.

Over the years, devotees also shared stories of conversions, answered prayers, and healings connected with them.

But there is one part of this story every Catholic needs to know.

The Church investigated what happened.

In 1951, the Holy Office determined that the events at Lipa, including the showers of petals, did not have a supernatural origin.

Pope Pius XII confirmed that decision.

Decades later, the Vatican reaffirmed that the ruling was definitive.

And in 2023, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines again reminded Catholics that this judgment still stands.

So the Church does not ask us to believe these petals were miraculous.

And maybe that leaves us with an even deeper question.

If something extraordinary catches our attention, where does it ultimately lead us?

Because Mary never takes the place of Jesus.

Her whole mission is to point us toward Him.

And no mysterious petal could ever be greater than the grace Christ already gives us through prayer, the Eucharist, and a life lived close to Him.
