🚨Today's Fertiliser crisis for farmers = Tomorrow’s Food crisis For consumers
This morning, hundreds of European farmers are now gathering in front of the @Europarl_EN to sound the alarm: the EU is heading straight for the fertiliser wall 💥
While @EU_Commission ia expected to presents its long awaited Fertiliser Action Plan this afternoon, time is running out for immediate concrete action !
📢@CopaCogeca today announced a mobilisation for May 19, the date on which the @EU_Commission is set to release its Fertiliser Action Plan. This plan, unless there is a rapid change in direction, is unlikely to meet the expectations of the European farming community or address the scale of the crisis that has been unfolding since the outbreak of the conflict in Iran.
The @EU_Commission has both the tools and the means to act in the short, medium and long term. Any delays in taking action in the coming weeks and months, while farmers are already beginning to prepare their stock for the upcoming season, could have major consequences for consumer prices in 🇪🇺and for our ability to support global food security.

Plot twist.
For weeks, we have been hearing highly political debates on #CBAM and its impact on agriculture. Yet, no one tried to answer THE central question : What will CBAM actually cost European farmers ?
🚨@COPACOGECA is today releasing its first estimates, and they are alarming.
📈CBAM direct cost for farmers is estimated at €820 million in 2026, rising to €3.4 billion in 2034. Over the next seven years, this represents around €12 billion !
⚠️But here’s the catch: if EU fertiliser prices continue to align with import prices, the total impact could reach €39 billion ➡️ nearly 10% of the current #CAP budget.
❌ These are costs European farmers simply cannot absorb.
Will the @EU_Commission's Fertilisers Action Plan on 19 May finally provide answers that match the scale of the challenge?
🔴For the 3⃣rd year in a row, European cereal producers are in the red economically, losing up to €500 per hectare. This situation is becoming increasingly structural and should raise concern well beyond the farming sector. What is the main driver? Fertilisers and their prices.
While crop prices remain relatively stable, fertilisers prices have seen a dramatic increase in the EU, creating a scissor effect ✂️
To make the situation worse, starting in 2026, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), enforced by the @EU_Commission impose additional tariffs on imported goods with higher CO₂ emissions, including fertilisers.
📌On Monday 13th, the European Commission will organise a high-level meeting in Brussels on this issue. Ahead of that event, we wanted to set the record straight with a video showing how cereals and arable farmers are really impacted on the ground.
One thing is certain: if we don’t act now, the future of EU cereals, all other arable crops, and the 🇪🇺 farmers who grow them is at risk. And that is a future none of us can afford!
COPA-COGECA Communications Director, Jean-Baptiste Boucher took part in the @ENAJ_tweets Symposium at the European Committee of the Regions, addressing leaks, misinformation, and trust in agricultural communication 📰📲
Our message in the panel: the gap between the EU bubble and on-the-ground farm realities is widening. It is high time for journalists, policymakers, and stakeholders in Brussels to spend more time on farms, reconnect with the field, and help avoid urban bias.
⚫️Bad streak continues for European agriculture: Conclusion of the 🇪🇺🇦🇺 Free Trade Agreement in Canberra raises multiple and strong concerns for European agriculture, which is clearly and once again the bargaining chip of the EU strategy to secure broader trade and political objectives.
A vision that responds to the emergencies of the moment, but whose medium-term consequences will be unsustainable for many sensitive farming sectors.
🔴The significant concessions on highly sensitive agricultural sectors-particularly beef (30,600 t TRQ), sheep meat (25, 000 t TRQ – with only 27% frozen,) sugar (35,000 t TRQ) and rice (8,500 t TRQ) have long drawn strong opposition and concern from the farming community.
❌In a post-#Mercosur context, the cumulative impact of successive trade agreements makes these concessions unacceptable. Even for a traditionally more offensive sector like wine, the potential benefits of this agreement remain elusive, with Australian exporters likely to see more benefits due to the elimination of duties.
❗️The absence of a comprehensive approach to managing the cumulative impact of these agreements continues to raise fundamental questions about the coherence and sustainability of 🇪🇺 trade policy.
In addition safeguards mechanisms proposed by the @EU_Commission remain more like communication tools to promote hardly acceptable agreements than truly effective mechanisms that can be activated in the event of a crisis.
We now await the full details of the agreement, especially on the outcome of GI protection and TRQ management, to assess its precise implications and impact.

🚜🇪🇺 From 18 December in Bruxelles to 20 January in Strasbourg, European farmers have shown their determination to save the future of EU farming.
Farmers have been one of the backbone of European construction for more than 80 years. If you break the backbone, you can't stand anymore.
Our message is clear: we will keep pushing for a strong common #CAP, for fair trade deals and legal certainty. The mobilisation continues !

🚨🚜 BREAKING: MEPs pivotal vote validates EU farming community’s rightful concerns and mobilisation
The result of the vote in the @Europarl_EN on the referral of the Mercosur Agreement to the ECJ clearly shows how divisive this agreement is.
It also shows that the arguments put forward by the farming community, which just want fairness, have made sense to a lot of MEPs, across national and political lines.
🇪🇺 farmers and agri-cooperatives are the first to pay for geopolitical upheavals and unrest.
Fair and balanced trade, coherent with internal policies needs to be a certainty, even in uncertain times.
Trade policy cannot continue to reward lower standards while European farmers are asked to do more with less.
The current global uncertainty is an additional reason for the EU to invest in and protect a sector that lies at the very foundation of the European project, that boosts the EU economy by contributing to a positive agri-food trade balance and sustains rural communities while providing citizens with safe, high-quality and nutritious food.

Mobilisation is ongoing in Strasbourg, where 700 farmers are still facing the @Europarl_EN ahead of a key vote on trade.
Our banner has been deployed on the bridge in front of the hemicycle: MEPs don't accept the unacceptable!
EU farmers and agri-cooperatives are reiterating their call for the EU institutions to invest in agriculture by delivering concrete policy answers.
Yesterday, many MEPs from all political parties joined the stage, recognising the urgency of the farmers' concerns. Now, it is time to act!
