Which would likely hit China’s Innolight, Eoptolink, and other Chinese optical interconnect supply chains.

We'll likely see a larger bifurcation of supply chains with even greater importance put on Western players.

In my twenties, I went through something very similar, although the amounts involved were much smaller. I lost my entire bankroll twice. I started from nothing, built it up to over a million, then ended up back at zero. That same cycle happened twice. So I feel I'm in a good position to speak about this.

For a long time, I blamed myself my bad luck, my poor decisions, and countless other things. Eventually, I started looking into why it had happened. What I discovered was that it wasn't simply a matter of personal failure. The system itself is structured in a way that makes losing everything the most likely outcome. What @Jelitics wrote is almost a textbook example of what happens to so many gamblers.

The first issue I faced in my twenties was my brain itself. The brain especially the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for impulse control, decision-making, and emotional regulation , continues developing until the mid-twenties, and in men that process can sometimes take even longer. During this period, often called emerging adulthood (roughly ages 18–29), many young men struggle to make consistently rational decisions.

Put simply, we have two competing systems in the brain. One is emotional it craves excitement, novelty, and risk. The other is rational it tells us to slow down, think things through, and only then make a decision. By the time we're in our thirties, these systems are usually much better balanced. The problem is that in young men they don't mature at the same pace. That's why we tend to make riskier and, frankly, dumber decisions when we're younger. The part of the brain responsible for self-control simply isn't fully developed yet.

Sports betting is particularly dangerous because most people see it as a game of skill rather than gambling. We believe success comes from knowledge, analysis, and expertise. Because of that, the brain lowers its natural defenses against gambling.

Every win gets credited to our own intelligence and ability.

Scientifically, this is known as self-serving attribution, one of the best-documented cognitive biases in gambling. When we win, we tell ourselves, "That was my skill. I saw something everyone else missed." When we lose, it's always something else: bad luck, a terrible referee decision, a last-minute penalty, an unlucky bounce, or simply a poor decision that we'll "fix next time."

Another powerful psychological trap is the near-miss effect. That's when you're incredibly close to winning a last-second goal, a missed penalty, an unexpected mistake that ruins an otherwise perfect bet. Even though you lost, your brain reacts almost as if you had won.

Neurologically, a near miss activates many of the same reward circuits as an actual win. Your brain essentially rewards you and sends the message: "You were so close. Keep going." Instead of discouraging you, it motivates you to bet again.

The third trick the brain plays on us is hindsight bias.

After the match is over, every outcome suddenly seems obvious. Looking back, everything appears perfectly logical. The brain convinces itself that the result was predictable all along and if it was predictable, then surely I could have predicted it.

Every game, regardless of whether you won or lost, becomes another lesson that boosts your confidence. Instead of becoming more cautious, you become more convinced that you're getting better at it.

This brings us to ego, and why successful, intelligent people often have an even harder time walking away.

Up to this point, we've been talking about money. But money isn't what keeps someone sitting at the betting table after they've already lost.

That's why a person who still has $6.5 million doesn't see themselves as someone with $6.5 million. They don't think, "I can stop now and still live an incredible life."

Instead, they see the $13 million they've lost. They see the $20 million they once had. That becomes their reference point.

Every winning bet is more than just making money it's a public statement: "I see something that everyone else misses."

It's a statement about your intelligence, not your finances. That's why losing doesn't hurt like an expense. It hurts like a verdict.

The message isn't, "You lost $13 million."
The message is, "You're not the person you thought you were." And that's where everything changes.

The next bet is no longer an attempt to recover money.
It's an attempt to disprove that verdict about yourself.

That's why quitting doesn't feel like an option. Quitting feels like signing a confession that the loss was deserved that you were never as capable as you believed, that you were fooling yourself all along.

Psychologically, that's even more painful than placing another bet.

As long as you're still playing, the question remains unanswered.

Then something that seems completely irrational begins to happen: the more someone loses, the larger their bets become.

A small win can't erase a massive blow to your identity. To restore your self-image, you need a spectacular comeback.

And once that downward spiral begins, there's rarely a way back. That's when the cycle described by Prospect Theory takes over.

This is arguably the most important mathematical principle behind gambling behavior. People become risk-seeking when they're facing losses.

Once you're already in the red, accepting a certain loss becomes psychologically the hardest option.

That's why chasing losses isn't really a choice it's the predictable outcome of how the human brain works.

And that's what leads to the worst part.

If someone falls from $20 million to $6.5 million, getting back to where they started requires a 208% return.

The original loss was "only" 67%, but recovering from it mathematically requires taking even greater risks than the ones that caused the collapse in the first place.

Bigger risks almost inevitably lead to even faster losses.

If Jeltics keeps going down this path, He will eventually end up with nothing. Then he'll start borrowing money, and sink even deeper into depression. Because gamblers almost never stop when they reach zero. They stop only when there's no one left to borrow from and no way left to keep gambling.

How I Finally Beat Gambling Addiction

This is probably the hardest part to write about because recovery is highly individual. I can only share what worked for me and what I learned from my own experience.

The first thing that truly helped was finding someone I completely trusted. In my case, it was my older brother. He had occasionally bet on sports himself, so he understood the world I was coming from. My parents or my girlfriend wouldn't have understood it in the same way.

I admitted everything to him and gave him control over my finances. He had access to my accounts and monitored my spending. The goal wasn't to take away my independence it was to make sure I couldn't access large amounts of money on impulse.

Separate your money.

Move most of your capital somewhere you simply can't access the same day a long-term investment account, a fixed-term deposit, or any financial instrument that requires several days before you can withdraw the money.

The delay is more important than the interest it earns.

Require a second signature.

Not because you're incapable of making decisions, but because in that particular moment you're not the person making them. The addiction is.

Telling Someone the Truth

Admitting your addiction is both the hardest step and the most valuable one.
Gambling thrives in secrecy.

As long as you're the only person who knows what's in your bank account, every decision happens without a witness.

You need one person who knows the entire truth not just "I think I have a gambling problem," but "I went from $20 million to $6.5 million. Here's every account statement."

Then meet that person every single week, whether you have anything new to report or not.

Why does this work?

Because it introduces an external reality into a system that previously existed only inside your own head.

It's much harder to lie to yourself when someone else can see the numbers.

That's why it's crucial to tell someone who is capable of understanding rather than judging.

This point is often overlooked.

If you confide in someone who reacts with shock, anger, tears, or a moral lecture, the exact opposite of what you need happens.

Your shame grows.

And next time, you'll keep everything to yourself.

That's why choosing the right person isn't a minor detaili t's half the battle.

The right person:

doesn't lecture or moralize
doesn't panic when they see the numbers
keeps your confidence
isn't emotionally dependent on whether you succeed or fail

The wrong person:

a parent who will be devastated
a partner who experiences it primarily as betrayal
a friend who gambles themselves
someone who will later throw the word "gambling addict" back in your face during an argument

In many cases, the best choice is actually a professional or someone outside your closest circle.

What you need isn't sympathy.

You need someone in front of whom telling the truth comes at no emotional cost.

Find a Hobby. In My Case, It Was Tennis

One of the biggest challenges after quitting gambling is answering a simple question:

"What do I do with myself now?"

Gambling used to fill several hours of my day with constant excitement and intensity. When that suddenly disappears, it leaves behind a void. And that void is one of the strongest triggers for relapse.

Most relapses don't happen because people desperately want more money. They happen because of boredom, loneliness, and silence.

You need something to replace gambling something that provides a similar sense of challenge and excitement, but with a real learning curve.

For me, that was tennis. Joining an amateur tennis league helped enormously.

It could also be:

a sport where you can clearly see yourself improving ( martial arts, climbing, running, cycling, weightlifting, etc.) an activity that involves risk, but not financial risk
a meaningful job, business, or personal project with real goals and real consequences

The key difference is this:

In gambling, effort and results are largely disconnected. You can make the perfect decision and still lose, or make a terrible decision and still win.

In sports, work, and most worthwhile pursuits, effort and results are connected. You're still engaging the same dopamine system but this time, it's helping you build something real instead of chasing an illusion.

Can You Ever Go Back to Gambling?

This is a very individual question. The answer depends entirely on the person.
Most experts would say the safest approach is to stop completely and never gamble again.

My experience was different.

Over the years, I had developed genuine knowledge, skills, and professional connections through sports betting. Those skills allowed me to continue earning a respectable income, and realistically, it would have been difficult to monetize that knowledge in another industry.

So eventually, I did return and I was able to make money again.

The difference was that I wasn't the same person anymore.

Age had changed me. I had become emotionally more stable, more patient, and far less impulsive. I no longer saw betting as excitement or entertainment. I treated it as a business and an investment.

Everything became structured:

a clearly defined strategy
a predetermined bankroll
strict maximum bet sizes
detailed record-keeping of every wager, just like running a business

Structure creates stability. Disciplined betting leaves far less room for emotional decisions, tilt, or chasing losses. And with consistency came genuine confidence. I haven't had a gambling-related problem in over ten years.

That said, the safeguards are still there.

The people closest to me still have oversight of my finances. If they notice unusual deposits, withdrawals, or betting activity, they're there to raise the alarm before it can become a problem again.

I'll say it again because it's important:

Everyone is different.

What worked for me won't work for everyone. Each person has to honestly assess themselves and make the decision that's right for them. For many people, that decision will be never gambling again. For others, it may be possible to return under strict controls and with complete emotional discipline but only if they're certain the addiction is no longer in control.
