Marriage of Shigeru Mizuki of GeGeGe no Kitaro fame in 1960 to his wife
No laws passed in Japan to make this disappear, it disappeared on its own as the economy grew rapidly with increase in energy use & all the social changes that entails
@shoheikondo Never understood why people criticize Japan for having women's only trains and camera shutter sounds on phones. They're good ways to protect women and privacy in public spaces, which Western countries could learn from
Americans may find this pretty funny, but this Japan bro has told me that this Navy officer from the 1800s is known by almost everyone in Japan, someone I doubt 1 in 100 Americans have even heard of before
is this like the Japanese equivalent of a US two-dollar bill? (in terms of rarity, not in price value.) got one as change when recharging my Pasmo, never seen it before
Some Jdrama classics are now on Netflix, in case you aren’t aware:

However, many Westerners cannot see past their own preferences. Plus, most haven't seen many Japanese people and expect them to look like Chinese and Koreans, so they assume Japanese people look "fake" because they don't fit their expectations
I do not like what westerners have to say about Kanna-chan😂 She's perfect. Me and my Japanese father(-figure) discussed her every week at our regular bar while Yandoku was airing
@postjawline Thanks for this! As a Catholic living in Japan, I notice the overlapping of values every day. However, I’m not sure I see an issue with butsudan so long as it’s Christian-ized. Non-Buddhist versions are sold at Catholic shops here, and they seem similar enough to ofrendas
@harukaawake While her claims are hyperbolic and inaccurate, the thing about soap and handwashing touches on an unfortunate truth. A surprising number of people don't use soap, and I have to remember to bring soap with me because many station and park bathrooms do not have soap dispensers
Today is the 15th anniversary of the March 11, 2011 disaster, known here as the Great East Japan Earthquake.
In 2019, Yahoo Japan took out an ad showing the height of the tsunami at Ofunato in Iwate. 16.7m is hard to visualize - it's the height of the red line in the text.
@OhayoMybrother Not impossible, just not allowed to have “official” viewings. But bars are still doing it. It’s allowed if a patron provides the Netflix himself, but I walked by a bar yesterday blatantly promoting that it was showing the WBC lol
@ConradBastable great points, and agreed. also pretty ironic that even though the Switch is designed for adults, the Pokemon games for it are the most dumbed-down, handholding ones they’ve made with mostly bad designs. (the only one I managed to enjoy was Legends Arceus)
