This is the longest piece I ever published, and with the New Yorker.
“A Palestinian Poet’s Perilous Journey Out of Gaza”
It’s about my painful experience of being separated from my family, beaten and shackled, as well as the terrorizing days before and after.
It’s published both in the print edition as well as on the New Yorker’s website.

Refaat Alareer, a leading Palestinian professor and writer, was killed in an airstrike in northern Gaza, on December 7. We spoke in October about the trauma of being a parent during war. He asked for the audio to be shared in the event of his death.
Sharing as Brown alumni, posted by Brown Students for Justice in Palestine — A message from our classmate & friend, Hisham Awartani:
“Had I been shot in the West Bank, where I grew up, the medical services that saved my life would likely have been withheld by the Israeli army.”
More important context is that Chicago police have trained with Israeli law enforcement. So, there are deep ties between Palestinians and Black people through the shared trauma of increased police presence, surveillance and brutality. https://t.co/slLR46j88z
Still saddened by the news in Monterey Park.😢In 2016, I wrote about Star Dance, the dance hall where the tragedy took place. It was such a lively place where folks of all different backgrounds would come together to enjoy themselves on the dance floor: https://t.co/VpUhyQserc
That’s why we intend to keep fighting until all student debt is canceled and college is free. If Biden can cancel this much debt, he can cancel it all. And one day, a president will.
And yes, we are coming for medical debt, rent, and carceral debt too.
roe overturned, and im thinking today of the old May ‘68 slogan: “cours vite, camarade, le vieux monde est derrière toi”— run fast, comrade, the old world is right behind you
One year after the Atlanta spa shootings, I haven't been able to turn the grief and rage into anything except for grief, rage, and this one very small poem. All I can say is: Hi, hello, also-hurting You. I'm holding us close today.
