OCTOBER WATCH: THE U.S. IS EXPANDING DEEP STRIKE CAPABILITIES AS IRAN’S PICKAXE MOUNTAIN MOVES INTO MILITARY PLANNING

The U.S. is already at war with Iran. The nuclear dispute remains unresolved, and Trump has repeatedly raised the possibility of striking Pickaxe Mountain, the deeply buried facility near Natanz. On September 10, he again warned that the U.S. could strike the site if activity continued there. Iran maintains that its nuclear programme is peaceful.

What deserves more attention is what has been happening inside the U.S. military at the same time.

Since 2025, Washington has reverse-engineered a critical component of the existing GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, sustained the MOP fleet with new components, and urgently prepared a granite underground facility at White Sands for classified live-fire testing. DTRA has also been given a wider Pentagon role in defeating hardened and deeply buried targets.

Then came September 2026.

On September 8, the Air Force awarded four U.S. manufacturers a new production vehicle with a cumulative ceiling of $149 million for large penetrator warhead case assemblies. Only $10,000 was obligated at award, so this is production capacity rather than evidence that $149 million of weapons have already been ordered.

On September 14, the Air Force returned to industry seeking additional manufacturing sources for the FMU-167/B Hard Target Void Sensing Fuze, a system associated with weapons designed to penetrate hardened targets and detect underground voids. This is currently market research, not a production order.

At the same time, Pickaxe Mountain is no longer simply a theoretical target. Recent reporting has described the site as part of U.S. military planning, while uncertainty remains over whether existing conventional weapons can reliably destroy a facility buried so deeply under granite.

None of this proves that a strike has been ordered.

But going into October, the more important question is this:

If diplomacy fails, what constraints still stand between U.S. planning and a possible strike on Pickaxe Mountain?

There are political and strategic constraints. But there is also a technical problem: whether the United States can reliably destroy the facility rather than only damage its entrances.

This is why the recent Pentagon activity matters.

The existing GBU-57 may not reliably solve the Pickaxe problem, while the next generation of penetrator weapons remains under development. At the same time, the Pentagon is sustaining the current MOP force, expanding penetrator manufacturing capacity, looking again at hard-target fuzes, increasing underground testing, and strengthening the institutional structure responsible for hardened and deeply buried targets.

Military capabilities are not developed outside their strategic environment.

The U.S. is fighting Iran. The nuclear issue remains unresolved. Pickaxe Mountain is receiving direct presidential attention. And the Pentagon is simultaneously strengthening several of the capabilities relevant to attacking deeply buried facilities.

October is therefore worth watching not only for what Trump says, but for what the Pentagon does next.

The most important missing piece remains the classified White Sands activity: what was tested, whether it worked, and whether it changed the military options available against Pickaxe Mountain.
