For a long time, the only Westerners that Japan would talk to were the Portuguese. So the English and Americans took the word "Japan" from Portuguese.

The Portuguese got the word from Malay, which got the word from some flavor of Chinese.

So the English name for Japan is the English version of the Portuguese version of the Malay version of a Chinese word for Japan.
