What the heck is wrong with enjoying both adaptations? People always gotta turn it into some competition.

As an "old" person who read the manga first, then saw the 1995 anime movie, THAT was a shock for me when I first saw it.

Mamoru Oshii's 1995 GiTS removed the color, personality, quirky humor, banter, nerfed the plotlines, and flattened the characters to make it more introspective, philosophical, and more grim. He made the movie more in the vibe of Blade Runner existential dread, and the anime movie production was very high budget at the time, featuring buttery smooth animation.

It was, in its own way, a masterpiece in coherent narrative, vibe, and atmosphere, and it had a lot of international global appeal. Many people treated it as a major, serious entry from Japan in the realm of animated cinema... where animations can clearly be made for the more sophisticated adult audience.

The 1995 GiTS was one of the major animated works from Japan, along with many of the Hayao Miyazaki anime films that made a certain element of Japanese anime more mainstream in the late 1990's to the 2000's. THAT version of GITS inspired the 1999 movie " The Matrix ".

But for me, I always wanted an adaptation that followed the manga despite being a massive fan of the 1995 GiTS, or SAC 1&2. The version of Kusanagi Motoko who was the quirky "female gorilla" archetype that her squadmates lovingly call her, and calls Aramaki an "ape face" and gives him a lot of headaches trying to manage the team. The version of Section 9 that's full of personality, a bunch of misfits and scoundrels instead of the overly polished elite unit portrayed in the other adaptations...

It brings back the mix of high-concept cyberpunk with political intrigue and weird humor... messy, energetic... the version that made me fall in love with the cyberpunk genre in the first place.

原作準拠の新アニメを見て改めて感じたのは、押井守版『攻殻機動隊』の少佐はやはり独特だったということ。原作の草薙素子は表情が豊かで、ギャグや軽口も飛ばす人間味のあるキャラクターだが、押井版では感情表現を極力抑え、まるで機械や人形のような存在として描かれている。

特に印象的なのは、無機質で鋭い目つきや静かな佇まいで、「人間と機械の境界」を映像で表現しようとする演出が際立っている。
そのため、原作寄りの少佐を見ると、逆に押井版の「機械らしさ」「異質さ」がよく分かる。

原作ファンの視点から見れば、押井版は原作の忠実な映像化ではなく、一種の「意訳」であることは間違いない。しかし、それは優劣の話ではない。
押井版は哲学性や映像美を徹底的に追求した作品だからこそ高く評価され、世界中に『攻殻機動隊』という作品を広めるきっかけにもなった。

同じ『攻殻機動隊』でありながら、原作と押井版は目指した方向性が大きく異なる。だからこそ、それぞれが唯一無二の魅力を持つ作品として、多くのファンに愛され続けているのだと思う。
