Strawberry-coloured, summer plankton. Protoperidinium are blooming and made my fine-net sample pink this week. These tiny dinoflagellates (diameter ~80 µm) prey upon phytoplankton such as diatoms by extruding their cytoplasm from between their two horns to engulf their prey.

Tintinnids, 200µm tall, are ciliates in a vase-like shell. Abundant in my fine-net sample, they feed on phytoplankton & bacteria, & are eaten by larger zooplankton. Except my 280µm inshore coarse-net sample is devoid of zooplankton; something unusual is occurring. @zeiss_micro

I tried to interview a former female EFF member on a panel….she just kept backing up the man in the panel and started ALL her submissions with mentioning how this man was right…

And I realised it was a trauma response from being a female in EFF. The only way they get heard is if they acknowledge that they agree with a man.

I didn’t put out the episode because it was embarrassing for her actually.

Fascinating to watch this. Because planktonic arrow worms are transparent you can see the perfect, microscopic, biological engineering of the jaws they use to ram in their food; in this case a copepod. I wonder what force the jaws exert? @zeiss_micro

Incredibly beautiful shapes among the winter phytoplankton in my sample collected off Plymouth, UK; they are like jewels. These single 'solar' cells begin the marine food chain. Watch a dinoflagellate get eaten by a copepod. @zeiss_micro

This ends in a horror story. Medusae of Eutima gegenbauri are abundant in the Plymouth plankton. These predators eat other zooplankton like copepods and arrow worms. Now, our microplastic pollution is also a part of their diet; what have we done? @zeiss_micro @BBCEarth
