Feminists should watch this movie...
Hope Gap (2019) - the quietest hit job you'll ever watch.
Thirty years of provision, patience, & emotional labor… erased with a calm speech & coastal scenery. The man doesn't explode. He doesn't cheat. He doesn't abuse. He leaves. And suddenly he's the villain.
This film is a masterclass in how male endurance gets reframed as male failure. Stay silent for decades, you're labelled "Emotionally unavailable". Finally choose peace, you're labelled "Selfish". Men are expected to be the emotional shock absorbers - take the hits, fund the life, swallow the resentment, then apologize for wanting air.
The son's arc is the tell. He learns that love, apparently, means watching a man be dismantled with polite words while everyone applauds the woman's self-discovery. No one asks what it costs a man to carry a marriage alone. No one cares… until he stops carrying it.
Brilliant performances, yes - Annette Bening, Bill Nighy, Josh O’Connor nail the restraint. And William Nicholson knows exactly what he's doing.
Hope Gap isn't about divorce. It's about how men are expected to endure quietly… & then be grateful for the privilege.
