@GraniRau the Registan of Samarkand is a gem. but Bukhara is also well worth the visit, and I believe the city as a whole is more beautiful. Khiva further afield is like an open-air museum.

@shagbark_hick traveling overseas is often still a bargain. many people are put off by high airfare, but don't realize that after that, hotels are often much cheaper than in the US, making it overall a cheaper (and more luxurious) trip

@Babygravy9 my greatgrandfather lived to almost 100. highly active. at age 90, he was on a ladder outside painting the second story of his house. 7 years later when more painting was needed, he hired someone. my mom asked why he wasn't doing it. "well you know, i'm not 90 years old anymore!"

@HPM1984Concord took the Transsiberian years ago from St. Pete's to Vladivostok. Amazing, unforgetable trip. But you can't help but notice that the country gets increasingly bleak the further from Moscow you get.

In 1953, the US's South Korean "ally" Syngman Rhee was violently opposed to the signing of the armistice between the US and China & North Korea. To scuttle the agreement, he deliberately and maliciously released thousands of POWs into the countryside. The US should never forget that those it considers "allies" will stop at nothing, including attacking the US itself, to get what they want. It should plan accordingly.
