The ABR says a resident can miss an average of 40/year, so needs to have 215 work assignments/yr on average over 4 years.

Well, ACGME requires residents to get 1 day off every 7. A resident who needed 16 consecutive weeks off in a year “could” work 6 work assignments each week for 36 weeks, counting the 6th day as an extra assignment. This yields 216 work assignments.

If you give a resident Monday off for working on Saturday, that’s not a day off that counts to the 140 day limit unless your program designates it that way.

Maybe these numbers change to 26 wks non-clinical during residency, with 16 wk limit for any given year. That makes sense. The point is that a combo of entire residency minimums and single year minimums could meet multiple objectives.

1. DR resident: up to 24 wks non-clinical time during residency, if approved by program
2. Of the 24 wks, only up to 12 wks can be in any single year of training
3. Approval by program reflects determination of resident achievement of competency metrics
