Scoop: we identified 3 outsourcing companies that are urgently hiring English-speaking content moderators to work for Xiaohongshu/REDNote, a sign that the platform is scrambling to grow its censorship capacity as thousands of TikTok refugees come in.

On TikTok the justices ruled that the law to ban or sell TikTok by this Sunday does not violate the First Amendment.
"There is no doubt that, for more than 170 million Americans, TikTok offers a distinctive and expansive outlet for expression, means of engagement, and source of community. But Congress has determined that divestiture is necessary to address its well-supported national security concerns regarding TikTok’s data collection practices and relationship with a foreign adversary. For the foregoing reasons, we conclude that the challenged provisions do not violate petitioners’ First Amendment rights."
RedNote will soon stop being a #Tiktokers shelter.

A New Way to Observe China
A recent article by CIA analysts highlights how Beijing has ramped up restrictions on foreign researchers, journalists, and access to open-source data. These measures have significantly limited insights into China’s political and economic landscape, making it increasingly challenging to obtain reliable information from within the country.
https://t.co/JsQ1JNHNJf
However, I’ve noticed a new trend that has emerged over the past year: the rise of mainland Chinese YouTubers. These creators have become an unexpected source of real-time observations and commentary on China’s social and economic conditions. Interestingly, the shift seems to be driven by reduced payouts from domestic platforms like Douyin, parent company of TikTok, and others, prompting many content creators to move to YouTube in search of better revenue streams.
This migration has led to a surge in Chinese-language content on YouTube, offering raw, up-to-the-minute perspectives that are harder to come by through official channels. These YouTubers often discuss social trends and economic situations, and even political developments with a level of candor that’s rare on state-controlled platforms. For me, tapping into this grassroots content has been an unexpectedly valuable resource for keeping a finger on the pulse of what’s really happening on the ground in China.
In an era where traditional sources are becoming less accessible, these independent voices are providing a new lens through which to observe the country’s unfolding dynamics.
