This is only tip of the iceberg. What follows is evn more alarming:
1. The burqa made compulsory
2. Girls’ education reduced to just 3 yrs
3. All television channels shut down
4. All schools/universities converted into madrasas
5. The nation's hardship attributed to divine test😢

Bad news from #Afghanistan. The Taliban leadership has ordered the shutdown of the internet. No explanation has been given. Even their own ministers are dumbfounded, unable to answer questions from Afghan business leaders and foreign officials as to why the decision was taken and what is next.

I am not sure that the leadership understood the consequences of its decision before taking it. But it now should be clear that it has produced a crisis:

1. Huge disruption of communication among people both inside and outside the country and between and among businesses and institutions.
2. increased financial problems: The banking system already faced obstacles because of sanctions. It is worse with no internet. People dependent on remittances sent by their relatives abroad will face significant delays.
3. The transportation sector is hugely disrupted. Flights both inside and outside the country have stopped, imposing significant costs on thousands of people and businesses. Local airlines are considering flying manually, a potential safety hazard.
4. The operations of hospitals and medical services are undermined.
Interpreting the pronouncements from Kandahar, it sounds like this action was taken because of concerns about pornography. If so, it’s overkill. Filters can be introduced to control unwanted content, as is the case in many countries.

I am told by a distinguished Islamic scholar that the foremost duty is grounded in the principle of Raf al-Haraj, removing hardship. This decision does the opposite. It does not serve the people. It makes their lives harder. It is urgent to review and revise it asap. Not to do so will damage the country, increase popular discontent, and risk increased instability.

The day the Soviet tanks rolled into Afghanistan in 1979, he wrote to US President Carter: "We now have the opportunity of giving to the USSR its Vietnam war." He told a French magazine in 1998 the US had lured Russia into Afg trap. That game continue to this day & at huge costs!
