Also it should be part of every design undergraduate experience @KISDonline as Bonsiepe was the first professor for interface design there. Kind of a weird story to be a professor of Designing Technological Futures there now.
I guess "The Santiago Boys" by @evgenymorozov will become my future reference to teach my students the nexus of technology, design, politics and cybernetics:

Es bleibt das große Rätsel, wie Menschen glauben können, Gesellschaften könnten sich nicht an etwas weniger Fleisch, andere Energieerzeugung, vielleicht eine Weile weniger Flüge oder Städte mit mehr Fahrradwegen anpassen, aber problemlos an eine 3 Grad heißere Erde.
One of the hardest aspects of producing The Santiago Boys was learning the craft of non-documentary story-telling. So I went through 70+ books on storytelling, screenplays, and character development. In yellow are the ones that actually helped - to plot, execute, and revise.
Once again I would like to point all of you to the writing and doing of Mike Cooley who did exactly forsee the price we would pay as society if automation of intellectual work would remain without political strategy. Socially useful production is still a viable concept...
Elite overproduction is not the issue. This strategic political narrative appears to be a key device in preserving the rent seeking privilege of the existing elites.
The structural failure is the inadequately investment in the automation of labour and the democratization of its benefits. This is a critical symbiotic investment which is required to accompany the investment in human development.
Hence our universities and missing Polytechnics are not the challenge - yes they need to be re-geared for human development in a new age of human machine, ecological symbiosis however the issue has been a missing automation industrial policy for radical automation to marry “universal” human flourishing.
This missing industrial automation policy is even more critical when we start to factor in the economic transition we are facing for a just net zero emissions future grounded in a nature rebuild.

This is the real, human cost of mass surveillance of everyone's private digital communications.
If we actually care about keeping people safe, we need more end-to-end encryption not less.
@k_pendergrast @shannonmattern I appreciate the metabolic turn - yet as a fungi collaborator I would argue that they are or have been already part of it, as they are a digestive system as much as we are. So they are less a metaphor for endless growth but for decay and the circularity of life.
About the metabolic turn:
"Large language models and image generators are enormous digestive systems that ingest and transform the raw materials of cultural output and behavioral data on behalf of voracious corporate interests."

@AuskarSurbakti@trtworld "What we have seen is a lot of efforts from the fossil fuel industry to try and delay the transition to low-carbon alternatives"
