A new AP investigation confirms what our client, DEA Special Agent David Howell, has been warning about since 2023: the DEA allowed hundreds of thousands of fentanyl pills to hit the streets of New Mexico from 2023 to 2025, choosing not to seize shipments it was actively monitoring in order to build bigger cases against traffickers, despite fentanyl being designated a weapon of mass destruction by @POTUS.
Howell filed protected disclosures and took his allegations to the Office of Special Counsel, which found a substantial likelihood of wrongdoing. Empower Oversight president @tristanleavitt told the AP, it is outrageous to put that many lives at risk in the hope of making a big case.
This is what courage looks like, and it is why whistleblowers deserve to be heard.

Whistleblowing is not just about policies and procedures; it can also change how others perceive your actions and intentions.
Department of Education whistleblower Timothy Mattson discusses how whistleblowers can sometimes face misunderstanding from colleagues who may not fully understand why concerns were raised in the first place. Mattson submitted protected disclosures regarding how the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights continued processing certain Title IX matters in states covered by a federal court injunction. Empower Oversight filed disclosures on his behalf with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel and fought to ensure the report was finalized and made public.
Watch the clip to hear Mattson discuss how perception and communication can become unexpected challenges in the whistleblower process.
