This morning the members of the Makerere University Central Management held a very cordial and engaged discussion with the leadership and staff of @MakerereLaw. We exchanged ideas on ways to improve research and graduate training at the School and the entire University. Thank you School of Law for your exemplary service to our great university.
Join us this Wednesday at 7:00 PM as Dr. Daniel Ruhweza of the @MakerereLaw takes us through law school and legal practice in Uganda, and shares insights on the next generation of lawyers.
The VC @ProfNawangwe has during his visitation to Colleges, Stand-alone Schools and Institutes to discuss management and administration of graduate training and research commended @MakerereLaw Leadership and Faculty on the good work that keeps Makerere's flag flying high.
He particularly commended the School on attaining the 40% Graduate Student enrolment target as per the University Strategic Plan. Citing examples of the U.S. and China, the VC noted that a country's PhD per capita correlates with capacity to develop and therefore encouraged @MakerereLaw to keep improving graduate training and research output.
Prof. Nawangwe commended the School's Staff Colloquia Series and research priorities on Environmental Law, especially Water, noting that this compliments institutional efforts to establish specialized Graduate programmes like the proposed collaborative Masters in Environmental Diplomacy with @UniPadova. He therefore reassured the School of support in establishment of new Centres of Excellence and revitalization of the Environment Law Centre (ELC) as well as measures to address staff promotion and recruitment.
However, there is a pressing need to strengthen the capabilities of many faculty members within legal education institutions, particularly those lacking formal training in competence-based curriculum development, assessment methodologies, experiential teaching approaches, and clinical supervision. Enhancing these skills is essential to ensure effective delivery of practical legal education and to fully realize the transformative potential of experiential learning.
The experiences gained by students through @makpilac substantiate the effectiveness of clinical methodologies in legal education. These practical engagements enhance lecture-student relationships, deepen students’ understanding of legal theory through real-world application, and strengthen essential research and communication skills. Moreover, they foster a commitment to social justice by promoting access to legal services for vulnerable communities, ultimately producing well-rounded, socially conscious legal practitioners.
Building on this momentum, @MakerereLaw has strategically advanced its commitment to experiential learning through the Public Interest Law Clinic (PILAC), offering a set of diverse range of practical skills, including:- internships, externships, moot court competitions, legal aid outreach, simulation exercises, public interest litigation, and community legal literacy program. These collectively foster the development of students’ legal skills, ethical awareness, and community engagement.
Government initiatives like the National Curriculum Development Centre introduced a new competence-based Curriculum at the lower secondary level, shifting from teacher-centered to learner-centered education, focused on practical skills and competencies.
.@Makerere legal education puts emphasis on doctrine, judicial precedent and lecture Based learning, criticized for disconnecting students from real world practice and community justice needs.
A public threat against a citizen for speaking about a colleague's disappearance isn't just alarming; it is unconstitutional. Articles 29(1)(a), 23, 20(2) and 8A are clear: no one is above the law, and no rank justifies intimidation.

.@MakerereLaw Principal commended the Uganda Judiciary for recognizing the school's contributions to justice and for involving @MakerereLaw in their activities and initiatives. "We value this partnership and plan to formalize it through a Memorandum of Understanding between Makerere University Law School and the Judiciary." ~ Prof. Ronald Naluwairo. Additionally, through the visit of Honorable Chief Justice of Zambia, he promised to foster new collaborations with colleagues in Zambia, particularly at the University of Zambia, on issues of mutual interest.
The Principal @MakerereLaw, Prof. Ronald Naluwairo congratulated Hon. Justice Dr. Mumba Malila, Chief Justice of the Republic of Zambia upon his appointment as the next Chairperson of the African Chief Justice Summit on Alternative Dispute Resolution. He emphasized that this achievement underscores the vital relationship between legal academia and the judiciary—both united by a shared mission to pursue justice and advance legal knowledge. The Principal reaffirmed the school's unwavering commitment to collaborate and support efforts aimed at strengthening ADR, fostering greater cooperation and progress in the pursuit of justice across the continent.
As an esteemed institution, we take great pride in our alumni who have made profound and impactful contributions to the judiciary. Our legacy resonates across Africa, exemplified by distinguished leaders such as the Chief Justice of Uganda, the Deputy Chief Justice, the Attorney General, and the Minister of Justice. These eminent figures stand as shining testaments to the enduring excellence and influence of our institution.
In response to the changing legal education landscape and the growing number of law schools, we have strategically shifted our focus towards expanding postgraduate training. We are increasing enrollment in LLM and LLD programs and developing a diverse array of specialized Master of Laws offerings to address evolving academic and professional demands. Over the past 15-18 years, we have made significant contributions to cultivating highly qualified legal professionals across the region, reinforcing our commitment to excellence in legal education.
