15 888 SUSPECTS ARRESTED AND 2773 CONVICTED FOR CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN IN THE PAST YEAR
@SAPoliceService
The South African Police Service (SAPS), working closely with key stakeholders, continues to intensify its fight against those who perpetrate crimes against children.
In the past year, 15 888 suspects were arrested nationwide and 2 773 convicted for crimes against children.
As Child Protection Month draws to a close, SAPS reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting children and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice.
Throughout Child Protection Month, law enforcement agencies, government departments, civil society organisations, and community structures strengthened awareness campaigns, prevention initiatives, and targeted operations aimed at safeguarding children from abuse, exploitation, neglect, trafficking, and other forms of violence.
SAPS' National Child Protection Month campaign culminated in a dialogue session and learner engagement held on Saturday, 06 June 2026, in Ntabankulu in the Eastern Cape, attended by more than 300 learners from local schools.
The National Component Head: Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, Major General Mmantsheke Lekhele led the proceedings and was joined by the Eastern Cape Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Policing, Major General Ngangema Xakavu, the Executive Mayor of the Ntabankulu Local Municipality, Councillor Vuyokazi Matwasa, and Chief MG Diko as well as other senior SAPS management, representatives from government departments, faith-based organisations and crime prevention stakeholders.
The solution-driven dialogue created an opportunity for SAPS, stakeholders and learners to engage openly on the consequences of teenage pregnancy, the legal implications of statutory rape, and the long-term impact these crimes have on the lives and futures of young people.
Delivering the keynote address, Major General Lekhele encouraged learners to make informed choices, speak out against abuse, and report criminal conduct. She further emphasised the importance of creating safe environments where children are protected, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.
Notable convictions and investigations highlighted during Child Protection Month include:
▶️ *Gauteng*: On 13 May 2026, the Pretoria North Magistrates' Court sentenced a stepfather to five life terms and an additional 60 years' imprisonment for rape, sexual assault, crimen injuria, and possession of child sexual abuse material. The victim was 12 years old when the abuse began.
▶️ *Eastern Cape*: The Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Humansdorp arrested a 39-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman for the alleged rape of a critically ill seven-year-old girl following an intensive investigation. The alleged abuse was uncovered after medical personnel at a provincial hospital in Gqeberha detected signs of sexual abuse while the child was receiving treatment.
▶️ *Western Cape*: The Western Cape High Court sentenced a paedophile from Ceres to five life terms and an additional 78 years' imprisonment for a series of sexual offences committed against two nine-year-old boys and a 16-year-old girl.
▶️ *Limpopo*: On 02 June 2026, the Groblersdal Regional Court sentenced a 22-year-old man to life imprisonment for the rape of a 10-year-old girl in the Motetema policing area.
▶️ *KwaZulu-Natal*: The Durban Magistrate's Court sentenced a 36-year-old man to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of raping his 12-year-old neighbour in 2021.
▶️ *Free State*: The Bloemfontein Regional Court sentenced a 33-year-old mother to three life terms and 23 years imprisonment and her 36-year-old boyfriend to three life terms on multiple charges of rape, sexual exploitation, and common assault.
Colonel Shibiri, reportedly the spouse of recently sacked Major-General Richard Shibiri (Pictured), is allegedly still sitting as Head of Detectives at Krugersdorp SAPS.
Yes, the same Major-General Richard Shibiri who was dismissed this week after SAPS found him guilty of misconduct linked to conduct that brought the organisation into disrepute.
Now serious allegations have been brought to my attention about Colonel Shibiri herself.
It is alleged that she had only a Standard 8 / Grade 10 baseline, allegedly used a fraudulent matric certificate for rank progression, and allegedly faced or is facing fraud and uttering proceedings linked to those credentials.
It is further alleged that there were numerous grievances against her promotion to full Colonel.
Despite this, she allegedly heads detectives at Krugersdorp SAPS and is allegedly used as Acting Station Commander when the Station Commander is away.
This is not normal.
If these allegations are correct, SAPS has allowed a person facing serious qualification-fraud questions to command detectives, oversee sensitive dockets, influence station operations and act as station head.
That raises direct questions about promotions, vetting, integrity management and who inside SAPS protected or enabled this.
I have already written to the National Commissioner and the Minister. I am now following up formally with the relevant command structures and through parliamentary questions.
SAPS cannot demand public trust while serious allegations at command level are quietly parked.
The law must apply inside SAPS too.

The process of retrieving the bodies is ongoing.
One of the reasons some have taken to the streets in recent months, is the claim that foreign nationals take jobs that should be done by South Africans. This heated interaction took place between Zandile Dabula of ActionSA and Julie Eccles of Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia.

If these allegations against Colonel Shibiri are true, then this is deeply concerning and raises very serious questions about integrity within SAPS leadership structures.
How does a person allegedly facing questions around fraudulent qualifications rise through the ranks to become Head of Detectives at Krugersdorp SAPS and even act as Station Commander?
Who approved the promotions?
Were proper vetting processes followed?
Were complaints and grievances ignored or suppressed?
If there were allegedly fraud and uttering investigations linked to qualifications, why was she allowed to continue occupying such a sensitive command position?
What message does this send to honest police officers who work hard, study legitimately and serve with integrity?
It also raises broader concerns about how many other officers may have progressed through the system using questionable qualifications or political protection.
The public cannot be expected to trust SAPS if serious allegations involving senior officers are not dealt with transparently and decisively.
There must be a full independent investigation, and SAPS leadership must publicly clarify the facts.
Silence only damages confidence further.
The law must apply equally, especially to those entrusted with enforcing it.
Chair of the Parliamentary Police Committee @IanCameron23 made the allegations in a post earlier today.

Following a Facebook advert selling goods, unsuspecting victims from JHB, were hijacked and kidnapped after making contact with the suspects near Mabopane, north of JHB.
Vision Tactical’s Specialised Support Unit (SSU) was immediately activated and deployed.
Through rapid response, coordinated operations, and close collaboration with strategic partners, teams successfully tracked the vehicle after a high-speed pursuit, leading to the safe recovery of both the victims and the vehicle on the R80.
This incident once again highlights the dangers linked to online marketplace transactions and the growing trend of criminals using social media platforms to lure victims.
It also demonstrates the importance of swift action, strong partnerships and intelligence-driven operations.
"We expect foreign nationals who are here to respect our laws. We therefore need to respect them as well. But they must respect the laws of our country."

Two suspects have been arrested at Mooiplaas Informal Settlement in Erasmia, Pretoria, after police recovered military firearms allegedly stolen during a burglary at a SANDF facility earlier this year.
The intelligence-driven operation, conducted jointly by SAPS and the SANDF on Saturday, led to the recovery of two R4 rifles with ammunition, a replica firearm, and a traffic officer’s uniform.
The suspects now face charges including possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of government property, possession of a dangerous weapon, and contravention of immigration laws.
Police are investigating whether the suspects may be linked to other criminal activities.

Detectives arrested 786 wanted suspects, including 149 individuals linked to crimes against women and children.
Two men were critically injured and a third remains missing following a shooting in Amouti, KZN, on Sunday evening.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), multiple emergency calls were received at approximately 19:34 after unidentified gunmen opened fire on a group of men standing on the roadside.
The suspects fled the scene in a seven-seater vehicle.
The first Reaction Officer to arrive requested immediate backup due to the tense conditions at the scene. One victim was rushed to hospital, while two others were initially unaccounted for.
Reaction Officers searched the poorly lit area and discovered a second victim suffering from gunshot wounds and barely responsive. Fearing the shooters could return, officers moved the injured man to safety while awaiting medical assistance.
The third victim remains missing.
