Today I conducted a surprise oversight visit to Khayelitsha SAPS FCS.
The unit is expected to deal with some of the most sensitive crimes, including sexual offences, child victims and family violence, but is operating with far too few people.
The reported ideal is about 43 personnel. The current number is about 21.
Despite this, the police officers there are doing serious work with very little. That must be recognised.
But commitment cannot replace capacity. SAPS must urgently address the staffing shortage and heavy docket loads at FCS units.
Victims deserve a system that has the people, time and tools to investigate properly.

JUST IN:
Western Cape police have mobilised additional resources and launched a massive manhunt following two separate mass shootings in Khayelitsha that claimed the lives of six men within hours of each other.
Detectives attached to the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit are investigating the deadly incidents, which occurred in Makhaza and Endlovini, Harare, between Sunday night and the early hours of Monday morning.
In the first attack, three men aged between 20 and 24 were gunned down inside an informal dwelling in Khonkxa Street, Makhaza, on Sunday evening at about 19:30.
According to police, family members heard multiple gunshots and rushed to investigate, only to find the victims lying inside the structure with fatal gunshot wounds.
Just hours later, at about 01:38 on Monday morning, another triple murder unfolded at a shebeen in Endlovini, Harare.
Three men, believed to be in their thirties, were shot during the incident and later succumbed to their injuries at a medical facility.
The suspects in both shootings fled the scenes and remain at large.
Police say the motives for the attacks are still under investigation.
SAPS confirmed that deployments have been increased in the affected communities as part of efforts to stabilise the area and track down those responsible.
The shootings have once again highlighted ongoing concerns over violent crime and gun violence in parts of the Western Cape.
The latest killings come amid a bloody weekend in the province. In Stellenbosch, six people were also killed in separate incidents on Saturday night, adding to fears over escalating violence across the Western Cape.
