i did not grow up in the stereotypical family- yet on television traditional families are seen as a man and a woman with a son and a daughter with a dog and a white picket fence- they also seemed more able and more intelligent than different fams. #NQSoc221

kivel gives solutions about changing our views, thoughts, and actions to those who are different from ourselves, yet he does not provide how people should go about this. what is a way to portray african american people in our society differently? #nqsoc221

when names started popping up about people who blamed things on african american men, i started doing some research. susan smith had a rough childhood and marriage, and blamed the men for the murder of her children, which she had done- bringing husband near to her #nqsoc221

the author talks about how people today are taught to be afraid of native americans, yet i have never been taught to be afraid of them. i may have looked at them through the different lens that movies create, yet i never feared them. y’all ever see the movie spirit? #nqsoc221

@shaefer_watson the whole purpose was to “civilize” them and integrate them so that they would not feel left out and could learn to communicate with Americans. by doing so, they were forced to attend schools and accept what they were told

@christy_garke43 by gaining support you gain interest, which then makes the elected official want to do something so as to popularize them. i do believe some officials generally want change, it is just that sometimes change takes a lot longer

@christy_garke43 it’s hard when the schools are based on the surroundings, because that is what decides how much money the school gets. with low- income family’s there is a low- income school system

@christy_garke43 they wanted to integrate them into society so they would not be seen as savages, and because they took their land. they really thought they were doing the Native Americans a solid when they were “civilizing” them

@shaefer_watson i also think that some people do not believe that their vote does not matter, especially when the popular vote gets dismissed when it comes to voting for our president
