SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas — Several shark attacks disrupted Fourth of July celebrations at South Padre Island, with one man being taken to the hospital for a severe bite, authorities said Thursday.
Police were called for the attack on the man around 11 a.m., according to Nikki Soto, the South Padre Island city secretary. He was treated at the beach by firefighters and police before being taken to the hospital.
No information was available yet about the man’s condition or the extent of his injuries.
Game Warden Capt. Chris Dowdy said that in the span of about two hours, four separate attacks were reported. Based on witness reports and images on social media, Dowdy said, authorities believe a single shark about 6 feet (about 1.8 meters) long was responsible.
Beach patrol, firefighters and police were patrolling the shore and flying drones after the attacks, Soto said.
The last reported shark attack in the area was five years ago, according to Dowdy. The Texas Parks & Wildlife is assisting the investigation.
The 4th of July holiday turned into a nightmare for beachgoers in the waters around South Padre Island, Texas, after authorities said a shark bit at least two swimmers.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reports that two people were bitten by what is believed to be the same shark, and another two people encountered the same shark but were not seriously hurt. The injured pair were taken to Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, Texas. One was later airlifted to another hospital, the agency said. Their conditions were not confirmed, and their names were not released. Around 11 a.m. local time Thursday, officers responded to a report of a man who had sustained a severe shark bite near the 4100 block of Gulf Boulevard, the South Padre Island Police Department reported. The South Padre Island fire and police department treated the victim on scene for a shark bite to his leg before he was transported to a nearby hospital, police said. Also shortly before 11 a.m., video obtained by CBS News showed police rushing to the scene of a woman who was bitten on her left leg by a shark while swimming.
The video showed Good Samaritans and first responders pulling the woman from the water and wrapping a tourniquet around her leg to slow the bleeding. A dorsal fin can be seen swimming back and forth near the shoreline.
Game Warden Capt. Chris Dowdy with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department told the Associated Press that authorities believe a single shark about 6 feet long was responsible.
Dr. Kelsey Banks, an associate research scientist with the Center for Sportfish Science and Conservation at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, told CBS News in an email that the video posted to social media suggested a "larger shark species."
"Larger coastal species have been known to increase feeding behaviors and remain closer to shore prior to large meteorological disturbances," Banks wrote. In response, officials quickly deployed drones, boats and a helicopter to search for sharks. The city said it was considering closing the beach to the public, a Coast Guard lieutenant confirmed to CBS News.
South Padre Island is a 113-mile-long barrier island, off the southern tip of Texas, known for its resorts and beaches.

BREAKING: Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has demanded that Joe Biden provide evidence to prove he has the “cognitive capacity” and “mental acuity” to lead the American people.
During an interview with “The Story” on Fox News, RFK Jr. said:
“I think he (Biden) needs to come out of the White House and show Americans that he has the cognitive capacity to, and the mental acuity, to handle this job at probably the most challenging time now, at least in recent American history.
“We’re facing issues that are existential. We’re involved in two wars.
“We have AI coming down, which is going to change everything, and there’s enormous danger in it.
“We have an economic crisis in this country where, you know, the middle class is disappearing. It’s been torpedoed.
“Where 57% of Americans can’t put their hands on $1,000; where an entire generation of kids cannot buy a home. This is a crisis.
“We need a president who is thinking about these things, who is articulating a solution for the American people.”
