When the United States decides to allow India to purchase Russian oil for just 30 days, it raises a fundamental question. Why should India need another country’s approval to secure its own energy needs?

Equally troubling is the sinking of the unarmed Iranian warship IRIS Dena by the United States soon after it participated in the International Fleet Review 2026 naval exercise hosted by India in Visakhapatnam. When a ship that came to India as part of a multinational exercise meets such a fate, India cannot appear silent or passive.

The Union BJP Government looks totally compromised on India’s long standing tradition of strategic autonomy and an independent foreign policy. India’s dignity in the international arena needs to be protected and the nation’s sovereignty and interests need to be defended.

Has the Narendra Modi government turned into a puppet of the United States? The news that the Donald Trump administration has “granted” India a 30-day window to buy oil from Russia is deeply humiliating. It appears that India’s independent foreign policy has been surrendered at the feet of United States.

There was a time when India’s foreign policy commanded admiration across the world. Even in the face of threats from powerful blocs, India never bowed its head. The proud tradition of independent foreign policy built by Jawaharlal Nehru and strengthened by Indira Gandhi has been dismantled by the Bharatiya Janata Party government. Today, the Modi government has reduced India to the status of a dependent state of America.

It is not for Donald Trump or the U.S. administration to decide from whom India should buy oil. That authority lies with the government elected by the people of India. One is now compelled to ask: is Trump only the President of the United States, or has he also become the Prime Minister of India?

As a sovereign nation, India needs no permission from any global power to decide what it should buy and from whom. The BJP government under Narendra Modi has undermined the very sense of national self-respect. It is attacking the pride of a great people who have never bowed before anyone.

As Rahul Gandhi rightly pointed out, India’s foreign policy emerged from the collective will of millions of Indians. Yet the central government now appears willing to compromise that legacy to protect other interests. Against this surrender, a powerful public sentiment will rise across India under the leadership of the Indian National Congress.
