Alright I’m doing Lolita discourse on Twitter because I’m an idiot and I hate life itself. The small brain take is that it’s a pedo book for perverts. The medium brain take is an over-zealous negation of the small brain take: that it’s a deeply ethical book written to condemn the horrors of child abuse. This is also wrong. Nabokov is an aesthete, and that’s not how aesthetes think. They don’t make art to teach lessons or “expose the evils of xyz.” They might claim to (as Nabokov does in the parody moralist voice of the introduction) but that’s just covering their tracks. It’s like Milton saying the aim of Paradise Lost is “to justify the ways of God to men” when that’s obviously not the primary intent. So Lolita has a pervert dimension and an ethical dimension, but the real aesthetic effect is in the tension between the two. It’s a dark comedy based on the ironic dissonance between the poetic rapture of the narrator and the ethical havoc he’s obviously inflicting on everyone around him. To fully appreciate the aesthetic effect you have to both be seduced by the voice and repulsed by its results, and to be decadent enough to allow yourself to enjoy that irony. It’s not for everyone. But the part of me that enjoys art hurts to see so many people attempting to defend it by reducing it to like, an instructional manual for guidance counselors.
