At least 20 police officers have been implicated in a large scale 18 million MVR catering fraud involving a catering arrangement between Sh. Milandhoo Police and a local catering business. The annual value of the contract is roughly 3.78 million MVR.

According to sources familiar with the investigation, 20 officers have been identified but only a handful of officers have faced disciplinary action so far.

Investigations reveal that officers created fake catering transactions, billing meals even when none were provided, including for visitors. When police pay the catering business for those bills, the officers split the money with the caterer. They’d been doing it for a few years.

Everyone needs more money to improve their standard of living, but not everyone is willing to lose their morals, ethics, and principles to achieve that. But when people get desperate, they tend to do whatever it takes to provide for their loved ones. I try not to judge them without putting myself in their shoes. It's the failure of leadership to be unable to select the right people to the right places. Very soon, there would be clashes amongst law enforcement as International best practices are not being used to clearly define jurisdiction of law enforcement entities. Law enforcement entities must always be independent of political influence to operate with integrity.
In Maldives, you get punished when you do the right thing, and while criminals walk free. The public must take a stand now.
