Romanian benefit fraudsters jailed for total of ten years

Members of a Romanian-based gang who illegally claimed £800,000 in housing benefit, tax credits, income support and child benefit payments have been jailed for a total of 10 years.

Nine people were sentenced yesterday at Southwark Crown Court for their part in a gang which police believe trafficked 181 children to Britain to claim benefits, which they then spent in their home town of Tandarei in south-east Romania.

The wife of the care assistant jailed for raping a mental health patient at St Martin’s Hospital in Canterbury has said she is “devastated”.
It has been revealed that John Mendy, 33, was married to Cathy Mendy, a senior health manager.
He came to the UK three years ago from the Gambia and got a job at St Martin’s where his wife is modern matron for Canterbury and Thanet Younger Adult In-Patient Services.

In June 2019, Obi Forgive, 28, of London, appeared at Northampton Crown Court and denied raping Melody.
Investigators told the court that Forgive had searched for women who were drunk and that Melody had likely undergone a 50-minute attack.
Forgive had tried to conceal evidence of his actions by changing his clothes before returning to nearby clubs, hunting for more victims. 
The judge ordered him to serve a further five years on licence and he was placed on the sex offenders' register for life.

A 59-year-old man from Slough, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced to 24 years in prison at Reading Crown Court.

A jury found him guilty of five counts of rape and one count each of rape of a girl under 13, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and conspiracy to kidnap at the same court on 17 February following a six-week trial. The jury also found him not guilty of one count of holding a person in slavery or servitude.
A 39-year-old woman from London, who also cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced to six years and six months in prison.

The jury found her guilty of one count each of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, conspiracy to kidnap and kidnapping. The jury also found her not guilty of one count of holding a person in slavery or servitude.
Nutel-Virgil Papadache, aged 41, of Brunswick Road, Sheffield, was sentenced to four years in prison. The jury found him guilty of one count of conspiracy to kidnap.
Marius Bucur, aged 19, of no fixed abode, was also sentenced to two years and six months in prison. The jury found him guilty of one count of conspiracy to kidnap.
Alexandru Olteanu, aged 20, of Austen Close, London, was sentenced to six months in prison. The jury found him guilty of one count conspiracy to kidnap.
The jury found Aurelia Stan, aged 38, of Brunswick Road, Sheffield, guilty of conspiracy to kidnap. She is due to be sentenced at the same court on 25 May.
The jury found both Alina Dogaru, aged 27, and Alexandru Monu, aged 24, both of Brunswick Road, Sheffield, not guilty of one count of conspiracy to kidnap.
In November 2020, the victim, then a teenager, reported an assault by the man from Slough and the woman from London.
The victim later disclosed that the man had raped her over a period of years.
In February last year, the offenders kidnapped the victim from foster care in Crowthorne.
She was located safely in Sheffield following a significant police investigation.
All eight defendants were charged on 3 March last year.

Three men have been jailed for raping a 16-year-old girl in an attack in which caustic soda was thrown on her.
The girl, who has learning difficulties, was lured into a north London flat and repeatedly raped.
Rogel McMorris, 18, from Tottenham, north London, was jailed for nine years for rape and grievous bodily harm.
Jason Brew, 19, from Tottenham, was jailed for six years and Hector Muaimba, 20, from Walthamstow, was given eight years for rape and robbery.

She told the court she agreed to meet a man she knew for sex there because she thought it would make her popular. But during a two-hour ordeal she was repeatedly raped by a group of men. Before they left McMorris threw caustic soda on her.
The girl was in a coma following the attack and has been left permanently disfigured. She is undergoing treatment, including surgery and skin grafts.
Judge Shaun Lyons said the girl's life had been ruined and she would have to live with major physical difficulties.
Outside court the girl's uncle read a statement on behalf of her family, including her parents, saying: "The past 12 months have been a very difficult time for us as a family.


 It feels like no sentence is any justice compared to what the victim has been through

He added: "We know the sentence imposed on the perpetrators of this hideous crime against our daughter, whatever and however we feel about it, will not bring sufficient justice and healing to our daughter."

A lack of co-operation by the community made it extremely difficult to investigate, she added.
"It doubled the amount of work to really get to the bottom of it and I don't think we ever really will," she said.
