UNICEF Rep. in Zambia Ms. Campbell, speaking on behalf of UN Resident Coord. emphasized the need to prioritize social protect. measures like the SCT. With poverty rates at 60%, she urged govt. to increase the SCT value amid the rising cost of living.

Countries that invest in facilities for walking and cycling, and in mass transit systems, significantly reduce the use of private cars, helping to improve road safety, alleviate congestion and reduce CO2 emissions. Happy to see Zambia moving in this direction.

Another huge benefit of improving road safety by making it safer to cycle + walk to work, is that CO2 emissions from cars are reduced. We're supporting a project with @ZiparInfo @ITDPAfrica + @malindimsoni on this in Lusaka.

Speaking to State Secretary @JochenFlasbarth on Monday 19 June, I questioned whether the BMZ's Africa Strategy was bold enough in its approach to reconcile Europe's goal to end fossil fuel consumption, with Africa's continued dependence on fossil fuels.

@WBG_Transport Carbon emissions from #transport in most African cities are still neglible. However, there is still a lot to be gained from transitioning to more sustainable modes of transport like #walking and #cycling

Road transport investments have historically focused on the motorist. Little attention has been given to road infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users.
