🇰🇷A constitutional amendment vote is scheduled to take place in South Korea’s National Assembly tomorrow.
While many citizens are not fully aware of the details, there are growing concerns that if this amendment passes and is put to a national referendum alongside the June 3 local elections, the Republic of Korea could undergo a fundamental shift in its identity from the free democratic republic that the people have known toward communization.
In strong opposition to the amendment, Hwang Kyo-ahn, former Prime Minister and leader of the Freedom and Innovation Party, has begun a hunger strike.
“Now is not the time for a constitutional amendment. It must not happen. It must never happen. Never, never. This will destroy the country.
South Korea is in a state of extreme emergency.
This is not just a political issue. It is not just a legal matter. What we are witnessing right now is an attempt to change the very foundation of our nation—the identity of the state itself.
Citizens, the Republic of Korea is a free democratic republic.
From one of the poorest nations in the world, we built a free democracy and rose to become a country admired across the globe. But now, there are those trying to bring this country down.
This constitutional amendment will be their final attempt.
It may begin with words that sound reasonable. But once the door to amendment is opened, the very system of our country could quickly collapse.
With my life on the line, I will begin this hunger strike to stop this reckless push. Citizens, please stand together with me.”

Chinese Communist Party-Linked Buddhist Delegation Visits Seoul, Raising Religious Freedom Concerns.
South Korea has long prided itself on religious freedom and pluralism, but recent government discussions about regulating “pseudo-religious” groups have sparked debate about the balance between public protection and individual belief.
A delegation from the China Buddhist Association — an organization described by international reports as aligned with the Chinese Communist Party’s United Front Work Department — recently visited Seoul and met with Korean Buddhist leaders.
This occurred shortly after those same leaders held a meeting with President Lee Jae-myung at the Blue House, where concerns about certain religious groups were raised.
The timing and nature of the visit highlight growing international attention on how governments interact with religious organizations.
In China, religious groups are tightly controlled to align with state policy, and similar patterns of influence have been observed in other countries.
For South Korea, where religious communities play significant social and cultural roles, any perceived external pressure on domestic religious policy raises important questions about sovereignty and the protection of minority faiths.
In an era of increasing geopolitical competition and transnational religious networks, understanding these developments is essential for citizens to evaluate how foreign actors may seek to shape South Korea’s internal affairs.
Public awareness helps ensure that policies on religion remain grounded in democratic values rather than external agendas.
Do you believe South Korea should strengthen safeguards against foreign influence on its religious communities, or is the current level of oversight sufficient to protect both public safety and religious freedom?
