Pediatric gastroenterologist with focus on IBD, intestinal ultrasound and precision medicine @ChildrensLA. Daughter, wife, 🇭🇹 descent. Tweets are my own.
Excited to now be able to offer point-of-care ultrasound for the #IBDpatients of @ChildrensLA. We now can offer close non-invasive monitoring options for disease activity. Took a while, but here it is!

TLDR on cannabinoids for #IBD
⭐️may improve symptoms (pain/diarrhea)
⭐️BUT no effect on disease activity
⭐️understand the WHY behind using cannabinoids and HOW we can optimize therapy.
⭐️Increase risk of hospitalization and surgery with use
Pearls from @ibdgijami#AIBD2025
New ESPGHAN/ECCO ASUC Consensus take-aways:
➡️VTE prophylaxis in all hospitalized pts
➡️IFX 10mg/kg-use TDM to guide dosing
➡️PJP prophylaxis in appropriate scenario: triple immunosuppression, double immunosuppression (1 CNI), steroid + low lymphocytes or JAKi #aibd2025
From the complementary medicine clinical breakout session at #AIBD2025, high usage amongst our patients. Good incentive for #IBD docs to learn more about the risk and benefits! @AIBDNetwork
@MaiaKayalMD excellent talk on Pouchitis at #AIBD2025@AIBDNetwork
🎯Targets in the management of pouchitis - less stringent - aim for ⬆️ QofL, clinical remission, and endo improvement
🍎🥔🍠Bonus image on diet modifications suggested for pouchitis!

🚨 Attention young faculty & trainees!
I asked these two #PedsGI @Sh@ShermanPrize success stories for one piece of advice on making meaningful progress for patients with #IBD:
Scott emphasized investing in #trainees to create a broad, lasting impact and legacy, while Mike highlighted finding #knowledgegaps—often by looking to what other fields are doing that IBD isn’t—and focusing efforts there.
That’s a pretty great roadmap. 💡🧠

🎉 congratulations to @oridamas , the #AIBD2025 Sherman Emerging Leader Prize recipient for all her work in nutrition as therapy for patients with IBD! Well deserved!

Ready for Day2 of #AIBD2025? I’m ready to face the frigid cold rooms and ready to learn from the #IBD experts!
As an AIBD Ambassador today, I will be covering the #ComplementaryMedicine Session, 5-6:30pm! See you at the room southern hemisphere II with this incredible panel 👇🏾
At #AIBD2025, we reviewed the European ECCO-ESPGHAN pediatric CD guideline, which recommends exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) as a first-line option for inducing remission in low-risk luminal Crohn’s. 🥤
EEN offers strong mucosal outcomes but remains socially challenging for many families, and this approach does not necessarily reflect current U.S. practice. A U.S. pediatric CD guideline is in development.

Antibiotic-refractory pouchitis:
➡️Not all pouch dysfunction=pouchitis
➡️Consider cross-sectional imaging for structural/inflammatory complications!
➡️growing evidence for advanced therapies, including biologics and targeted agents #aibd2025@DrSanket_Patel
#AIBD2025 some tips to consider with pain in patients with IBD, particularly on defecation, consider 1) lifestyle changes 2) pelvic floor PT 3) CBT (+/- Hypnosis) and patient driven skills! Many non-Pharmaceutical options exist!
📏 @ericbenchimol presenting a new pediatric IUS insight: In children with IBD who are in sustained deep remission, previously inflamed bowel wall thickness measures <2.5 mm—notably lower than the 3 mm cutoff used in adults—and this held true regardless of age, sex, or bowel segment.
A big step toward pediatric-specific IUS targets!
