Now let me answer in kind with long argument even though just presenting Messi’s resume is enough by itself against Ronaldo’s.
He went to the top team in the Saudi Pro League, a league ranked around #36, and couldn’t win it for three years despite having, the biggest payroll in the league roughly twice the second-place team, eight times the league average, and 20 times some of the bottom teams. A league where 12 of 18 teams were ranked outside the top 500 by major football rankings. LMAO. 🤣 It took signing the league MVP, João Félix for him to finally win the title in Year 4. Four years to take a second-place team to first in a league with four legitimate teams and a bunch of garbage.
The “system player” Messi, as you call him, went to a much stronger league, ranked around #10, and joined a last-place team that had lost 11 straight games. He took them to the first trophy in club history in his first year. Miami went from the bottom of the league to four trophies in two years and counting. And he’s doing it in a salary-cap league where you can’t simply outspend everybody. When you pay a player like Messi, you have less money available for the supporting cast. Messi took those players to the promised land.
Why aren’t you mentioning Ronaldo’s failure during his second stint at Manchester United? He eventually got benched because he wasn’t producing, his numbers were dropping, and then he ran to the Saudi league where the goals could keep piling up.
Juventus? 😂😂😂 Please. He joined a team that had already won Serie A seven consecutive years. Juventus didn’t buy Ronaldo to win Serie A they were already doing that without him. They bought him to win the Champions League. He promised it and never delivered. He scored plenty for a team that was already dominating Italy, with a huge portion coming from penalties while playing as their primary scorer. Juventus didn’t improve with Ronaldo; eventually their nine-year title streak ended with him there.
PSG? Messi joined a team with Mbappé and Neymar, two elite scorers, and adapted into more of a provider. Ronaldo doesn’t even start in that team he’d be competing with Mbappé for the scoring position. Neymar and Mbappé were already fighting over penalties and scoring in a dysfunctional team. And if Messi’s PSG period is supposedly his “failure,” look at what he won during that period: 3 French titles, the World Cup, Finalissima and 2 Copa América. Ronaldo would dream of failing like that.
La Liga? Please tell me you’re not pretending Ronaldo dominated Messi there. During their nine seasons together, Messi’s Barcelona won 6 league titles to Ronaldo’s 2. Messi was taking Ronaldo’s lunch while they were competing in the same league, at the same time, against the same opponents, more titles, more cups, more individual trophies.
Then there are their international careers. Messi took Argentina to 11 finals wining 6: World Cup, two Copa Américas, Finalissima, Olympic Gold and U20 World Cup, while collecting tournament-best-player awards along the way.
Portugal won Ronaldo’s biggest international trophy, Euro 2016, but Ronaldo was not Player of the Tournament. Across his enormous tournament career, he has never won a World Cup Golden Ball or Euro Player of the Tournament award. Look at the match ratings instead of the mythology. He never once won POTT at Portugal.
And the World Cup comparison is brutal. Six World Cups for Ronaldo, with only one knockout-stage goal and even that was a penalty. Meanwhile, at 39 in the 2026 World Cup, Messi had 8 goals and 4 assists. He produced more non-penalty goals in that one World Cup than Ronaldo managed across six.
I could keep going, but you get the point. Stop turning Ronaldo’s passport stamps into football achievements. When they competed directly, Messi beat him. When they separated, Messi kept winning. When they played internationally, Messi completed football.
