9 years ago, we came up with an idea to introduce an Uber-like service to the Maldives using motorcycles. We identified the problem we wanted to solve: vehicle congestion, while also giving people a chance to earn a living since they already own motorcycles. We called it Ride Maldives.

We met @em_saeed and the ministry to demo the app and seek endorsement, given that the service was ready for launch with over 200 male and female drivers on our waitlist.

The next day, the economic ministry released a press statement saying they were starting a new motorcycle taxi service and that companies could apply after a new regulation. We were told to apply.

Transport took almost a year to draft the regulation. They took our base idea but stripped out all the safety measures we had put in place. Despite multiple attempts, they didn’t even want to meet us or get our feedback before gazetting the regulation and opening it up for services.

Since it was already released, despite all our efforts to update it so we could provide a safe service to the public, the transport ministry denied it. So we decided to halt the project completely.

A few months later, a company started the motorcycle service and then stopped for whatever reason. We were later asked to come to the transport ministry for a discussion, and they assured us they would change everything to fit our needs. By then, it was too late, we had already moved on to our next project: LottieFiles.

Bottom line: our idea was to introduce an Uber-like motorcycle service, while the transport/economic ministries were still learning about the concept of motorcycle taxis from Thailand.

While we fight Shein, here’s the crazy thing we could actually do…

Everyone’s like “Shein and Temu are killing our local businesses.” True. But here’s a the thing: What if we flipped the script and opened a Maldivian shop in China?

Not joking. This idea is real. And doable.
China’s city of Yiwu is known as the “world’s supermarket.” It’s where small businesses from everywhere sell to everyone through e-commerce.
Yiwu = factory + logistics + TikTok live + Alibaba + everything else.

Now imagine a Maldives shop there. Fr!!

We stock that shop with:
•Havaadhu (Maldivian chili paste)
•Tuna jerky
•Kudhi Gulha/Bajiya
•Island-made products
All branded as #MadeInMaldives

Orders ship fast across China. No delays. No middlemen. Our stuff in their hands — within days.

Right now our producers can’t:
•Take digital payments easily
•Export directly to Asia
•Handle logistics
•Access platforms like Chinese sellers do

Why? Because we’ve got “no infrastructure” to help them scale. So they die out. Slowly. Quietly.

While we argue about overpriced Shein clothes and rising rents, landlords still win and global platforms still dominate.

But here’s the thing: Yiwu is ready for small countries like us.
It just needs the Maldivian gov (or a council) to get serious.

It’s already happening:
African nations, SEA exporters, small island nations they’re setting up Yiwu e-commerce warehouses with official backing. Using China’s infrastructure to scale their products. So… why not us?

Maldives can:
✅ Set up a Yiwu warehouse/shop
✅ List products on Chinese e-com platforms
✅ Use fast local shipping
✅ Sell through TikTok, Xiaohongshu, etc
✅ Brand ourselves globally
✅ Actually earn

That’s bigger than aid. That’s self-made exports. I mean this is the only solution but I’m tired of watching Maldivian products rot in potential because we lack policy imagination. You want to support local? Help us take “local” global.

Gov/Councils
Can we stop begging for visibility and start building trade power. This isn’t a dream but how the world already works.
