The Smashing Pumpkins headlined Lollapalooza in Chicago for the first time in thirty-two (not thirty-three) years on Friday, July 31. During the set, Billy Corgan switched to acoustic guitar and brought out Olivia Rodrigo to sing "Thirty-Three," from 1995's ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.�� ⁠ ⁠

Commenting on the performance, Rodrigo called “Thirty-Three" her favorite Pumpkins song and wrote that she felt "so lucky" to sing it with Corgan in the rain.⁠

Melissa Auf der Maur, who played bass for the Pumpkins in the '90s, told NME earlier this year about taking her daughter to see Rodrigo perform for her 13th birthday. They were invited backstage afterward, and Rodrigo told her daughter, "Without your mother, none of this would have happened." Auf der Maur said that was when she understood there were real lines running between that era of music and what Rodrigo makes now.⁠
