Cuba helped several African countries in their liberation struggles against brutal colonial occupiers, including against the apartheid regime in South Africa which the US backed and supported. That’s what he means by “radical left-wing terrorism”, just to be clear.
“Two things can be true at once” flattens the contradiction. The question isn’t whether racism *can* exist in Cuba. Of course postcolonial societies retain racial contradictions.
I am more interested in how these contradictions are situated historically and geopolitically, not just whether 2 claims can coexist. How this is being deployed *now* is to delegitimize the Cuban state/system itself under heightened imperialist assault, while erasing Cuba’s material history of anti-colonial + Pan-African/Pan-Caribbean solidarity in the process.
While the decades-long siege tightened soon after, with Trump enforcing a brutal blockade with grave humanitarian consequences to force Cuba into submission, the resolve amongst the people to defend the ideals of the Revolution & resist imperialist aggression remains very strong!
Late to post here, but sharing this article I wrote piecing together observations from my visit to Cuba this Jan, following the US attack on Venezuela abducting President Maduro, and amidst heightened aggressive rhetoric from Trump that Cuba would be next.

¡Qué viva Cuba! 🇨🇺
The first delegation of the Nuestra América Convoy has arrived in Havana from Europe, carrying more than four tonnes of critical medical aid.
La pasividad de América Latina ante la agresión del Imperio Epstein contra la digna isla de Cuba constituye sin duda la etapa más vergonzosa de toda nuestra historia.
Small but significant protests have emerged in Cuba, not driven by internal dissent, but by deliberate and extreme U.S. pressure that is making daily life nearly impossible. Trump’s fuel blockade has pushed an already struggling people to the brink, after more than 60 years of economic warfare.
The goal is unmistakable: destabilize daily life to provoke internal collapse. A regime-change strategy coldly executed from Washington not by troops, but by engineered suffering that deprives Cubans of food, medicine, energy and about everything basic need. Trump and Rubio, unable to defeat Iran, and needing a quick victory soon are betting that desperation will turn into an uprising in Cuba.
The Cuban people are exhausted but are not deceived by Trump’s genocidal siege. They see the game. And they aren’t playing it.
"Cuba is willing to have a dialogue with the United States."
At a press conference on Thursday, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel told reporters his government is open to conversations with the U.S., but only under conditions of respect and equality. He also stated that Cuba will defend its sovereignty against the “plans for terrorist acts” currently being organized by the U.S., and that the country has not received fuel since December, when the naval blockade on Venezuela began.
The US is gearing up to literally starve Cuba into submission. It is absolutely criminal and obscene. And this to a country that everyone knows poses *zero* threat to the US.
The people of Cuba need our full solidarity in resisting this onslaught.
