President Mnangagwa’s message resonates with Zimbabweans as protest action flops

President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa's appeal for Zimbabweans to maintain peace and disregard calls for demonstrations on 31 July appears to have resonated with many citizens, as the day passed with people largely continuing their normal activities. In his address during the ruling party's recent 395th Politburo meeting, the President urged Zimbabweans to respect the rule of law and reject calls for protests against the Government and the recently enacted Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 3) Act (CAA3). His message emphasised national unity, peace, and collective efforts toward achieving Vision 2030 and the people have heeded his call.

Across the country, Zimbabweans from different sectors of society went about their daily routines without any disruptions, reflecting a preference for stability and continued economic activity as per the President’s call. President Mnangagwa reiterated that national development can only be achieved in an environment of peace and unity. He called on citizens to avoid actions that could undermine national interests, including participating in unlawful demonstrations, while encouraging them to focus on productive activities that contribute to the country's growth.

Zimbabweans ignored the calls to protest which demonstrates that Zimbabweans are prioritising peace and development over political confrontation. The opposition's call for demonstrations failed to attract public support, with most citizens choosing to continue with their normal business which has been Government’s call since agitators of destruction started inciting people to demonstrate.

The Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 3) Act is now part of the country's supreme law following its enactment. The amendment was processed in accordance with constitutional and legal procedures, with opportunities for both supporting and opposing views to be expressed during the legislative process. From this perspective, the conclusion of the legislative process marks the beginning of implementation, and those who opposed the amendment are encouraged to engage within the country's democratic and constitutional framework and desist from unwarranted calls for protest action.

Building a modern and organised Harare

Harare’s renewal is essential to Zimbabwe’s journey towards Vision 2030. Measures addressing illegal vending and related activities seek to restore order while directing businesses towards safe, properly regulated and sustainable trading spaces.
A clean and well-planned capital, supported by dependable services, modern infrastructure and organised economic activity, strengthens investor confidence, promotes tourism and improves residents’ quality of life. This transformation demonstrates the Government’s commitment to building cities that reflect the standards of a prosperous upper-middle-income society.

The unrest in the DRC is deeply concerning. Constitutional reform must be debated through lawful institutions, inclusive dialogue and democratic participation and not street violence. Citizens may disagree, but lives, property and livelihoods must remain protected.
