Saylor does not use spoken words to tell people how she feels.
She is 7 and lives with a genetic condition called CASK. She communicates with her eyes and a tablet.
Even so, she has a message.
In a video for Sparrow Clubs, it came through her tablet. She said she proves every day that she is a fighter who does not give up.
She also said something about joy.
Living with CASK-related challenges is full of unknowns, she said. But it does not keep her from smiling, laughing and living with joy.
She loves two things.
Bluey and her brother. She also loves being around other kids.
Then came Thursday.
Saylor was critically injured in the shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. She is being treated at a hospital in Portland.
People who know her are not surprised by her spirit.
The head of Sparrow Clubs, Matt Sampson, calls her a feisty, vibrant fighter. He says she does not need words to connect.
Her community is wrapping around her.
The CASK community is holding a prayer on Zoom Sunday at 5 p.m. Pacific and 8 p.m. Eastern. A GoFundMe for her family has raised almost $400,000.
A teacher is recovering too.
Becky Drury has wounds to her arm and hand. She hopes to go home soon.

My friend, a special education teacher in our school district, came over last night. Our boys are best friends. She showed me the scratches and scabs on her arms from one of her students, the same student who tried to choke her earlier this week. She’s exhausted and doing her best to hang in there, but it’s a daily nightmare.

This is completely unacceptable. What are we doing? Why is a student this violent even allowed in a classroom setting? He needs intensive rehabilitation that classroom teachers are not trained or equipped to provide. And if there’s no real intervention, are we just waiting for the next Griffin J. John II?

The armed guard they had on hand, took out the attacker before a single child was harmed.
