The Self-Improving Data Engine

For a while, robot learning has followed one loop:

More tasks → More trajectories → More training.

Axis is evolving that loop:

Train → Find weaknesses → Identify missing data → Generate targeted data → Retrain → Repeat.

As someone contributing on the Axis Hub, watching this shift happen in real time is what excites me most.

The results are encouraging too. DAgger Round 2 pushed reported success from 68/160 to 78.3/160, showing how better human feedback can improve policy performance. Policy takeover is getting tighter as well, with an 8-step cap, cleaner undo/redo, and better-tuned gripper sensitivity.

But the bigger shift is the model-guided data engine.

Instead of simply collecting more data, the goal is to use model performance to identify what it still struggles with and guide the next round of data collection.

That could turn the data flywheel from just a pipeline into a self-improving loop.

Layer in Real2Sim2Real, articulated tasks, dual-arm support, and sim-to-real hardware validation, and the direction becomes even more interesting: building robot skills that can generalize beyond controlled environments.

More data helps. Knowing exactly what data you're missing is the real edge.
