Shared names and the challenge of transliteration misspellings rained havoc on many Iraqis and Afghanis. I remember in 2003, a US soldier joked about my name when looking through my passport, wanna know why we never caught Mullah Mohammed Omar - it's a girl !

The US grabbed a 9th grade Afghan boy, tortured him, and imprisoned him for 18 months because he happened to share a name with a Taliban commander.

Filled with rage for what happened to him the boy joined the Taliban when released.

He was later killed.
