A young man named Bildad fell into the Longonot Crater yesterday. He is still alive and KWS & Red Cross have been trying to rescue him but they have not been successful so far as he appears to be stuck in a very tricky crevice. The SACCO movement in Kenya is unique in that to borrow money or to have a say in the major decisions, you have to be a contributing member. You have to put your money where your vote is. So even the interest rates of loans are friendlier than those of banks.

As members' savings have grown, politicians have not stopped looking for ways to dip their fingers into members' savings without contributing a coin. A few years ago, MPs tried to introduce a bill for "special members" where people who had not contributed to the sacco could be allowed the right to make decisions.

Now CS @DrOparanya has found a different way for politicians to steal from SACCOs. He has introduced a delegate system.

According to his rule, members of SACCOs now have to vote for delegates who will represent them in decision-making. The goal is obvious. Politicians can corrupt the voting system by paying for campaigns of delegates, so that the delegates make decisions which are in the best interests of their sponsors, not the contributing members. Delegates can sign away SACCO members' savings to fake businesses. It will also make identity, rather than business interests, the primary decision foundation of SACCOs. You know Kenyans. Every time we have to vote on anything, we forget our common interests and look for identities to divide us.

If you want a model of what will happen to SACCOs, look at how @RealMatiangi destroyed university student democracy by introducing a similar system to student elections. His rules disenfranchised ordinary students and made student leaders susceptible to bribery.

SACCO contributing members need to see through this theft scheme and refuse the introduction of delegates. Democracy demands that we all have a say in decision making. It's not Oparanya's job to micromanage contributing members. We're adults. We can decide how we want our money invested and borrowed. That's why we joined SACCOs.
