#JackDorsey the former CEO of Twitter has made BIG claims about Indian government’s request on content removal.

Well, here is what Twitter’s own transparency report says!

During 2021-22, Twitter received 47,572 legal demands to remove content specifying 198,931 accounts. These requests came from 44 different countries.

97% of these requests came from just FIVE countries —

1. Japan - 20%+
2. Russia - 18%
3. South Korea - 12%
4. Turkey - 9%
5. India - 8%

Legal demands can be from govt or individual lawyers representing clients.

Not all legal demands are to shut voices, some of these demand related to — financial crimes, narcotics, prostitution, self-harm, suicide etc.

Takeaways —

1. These legal demands are not always used for wrong reasons
2. India has a small share of global legal demands

Why would Jack highlight India in his reply when the data is telling a completely different picture?

Most probably he is talking about a much smaller subset of this data. The subset specifically talking about verified journalists and media outlets.

Here is that data — 349 accounts of verified journalists and news outlets located around the world were subject to 326 legal demands.

3. Russia (55)
4. Pakistan (48)

Twitter withheld 17 Tweets from verified journalists and news outlets.

Before the Twitter blue launch, getting verified as a journalist was the easiest method. During prolonged protest, the amount of misinformation being shared on twitter by may such ‘journalists’ was not only questionable but also resulted into violence on ground.

The recording of Jack going viral only highlights this small subset, does not have full context of larger data set and is highly misleading.
