The Grind invites viewers to question: What kind of society have we built when fraud becomes normalized, and the line between resilience and desperation fades? And what future are we offering the next generation if survival remains their only dream?
Title – The Grind
Acrylic on Canvas
In The Grind, I confront the blurred lines between survival and morality in contemporary Nigeria. This painting captures a young boy seated beside a humble bag of bread, a symbol of sustenance and the daily hustle that defines life for many.
The boy in this work represents the Nigerian youth, observing, learning, and ultimately deciding how to navigate a world where the pressure to provide can eclipse the desire to do what’s right. The bread beside him is more than food; it’s a metaphor for survival.
In today's Nigeria, “the grind” has become a term for any hustle whether legitimate or not, that puts food on the table. From street vendors to tech-savvy scammers, the pursuit of survival often outweighs ethical boundaries.
