As we build up to the 2026 KSSSA Fifteens Nationals set for Kisumu this April, itโs worth taking a moment to appreciate where it all began.
The very first KSSSA Fifteens Nationals was played in 1990 in Nairobi, with the inaugural trophy donated by then KRFU (now KRU) Chairman, Ambassador Dennis Awori.
Lenana School made history that year, becoming the first ever champions. Led by the great flyhalf Sammy Khakame, they defeated Kakamega High School 36-6 in the final.
In 1991, the finals were held in Kakamega and Njoro became champions.
Then came 1992, and Njoro proved it was no fluke as they successfully defended their title.
Njoro staged a brilliant comeback from 0-6 down to beat Kakamega High School 13-6, becoming the first team to defend the title.
That Njoro side was captained by Lemmy Mwaura and featured the exciting flyhalf Allan Shpare Omuyakhu. Kakamega, led by Meshack Omuombo, had a strong lineup that included Denis Ekanusu, William Esiroyo, Erastus Karani, Innocent Moturi and Franklin Amiani among others.
The title remained outside Nairobi in 1993, with Nakuru High School keeping it in the Rift Valley.
Lenana School returned to the top in 1994, securing their second national title.
In 1995, a strong St. Maryโs School side were crowned champions before Nairobi School, featuring Alvin Rachier, Eddie Omuse, Ishmael Olewe and others, defeated Musingu to win the 1996 title.
Musinguโs class of 1996 was equally formidable, boasting players like Bill Odongo and Zeddy Akwanyi.
Nairobiโs dominance continued in 1997 as St. Maryโs School, inspired by players like Charles Cardovillis and others, reclaimed the national title.
They went on to defend it in 1998, becoming the second team to retain the KSSSA 15s title. That 1998 Saints squad also made history by becoming the first team to win three titles, having previously triumphed in 1995 and 1997.
In 1999, Lenana School joined Saints as three-time champions. Their squad featured an exciting halfback pairing of Samuel Migwi (RIP) and Peter Mutai, alongside forwards like Hilary Itela and Walter Were among others.
By the year 2000, Kakamega High School returned to the nationals for the first time since 1992. Playing at home, the team was captained by Pau Murunga and included players such as Dan Weku, Moses Mukabane, Emmanuel Shitote and John Makanga among others. This time they were crowned champions, after losing the 1990 and 1992 finals.
