Leader of the Women's Equality Party @WEP_UK. 1st person of colour to lead a UK political party. Usually reading something. Plenty of fire in my belly.
Big problems need bold collaboration and vision.
@sianberry MP and I have released ‘All Our Children’ a new report calling for universal free early years provision.
Childcare is essential infrastructure. It’s time we treated it that way.

Rattled, much?
A speech about unity, community and cohesion.
About the 99% Vs the 1%.
I'm not surprised the Labour Party didn't quite get that....

🚨Let's treat childcare like infrastructure.
In a new report written with the brilliant @ManduReid , I am calling for Universal Free Childcare to be moved forward as serious policy.
This is a big vision and I hope others will come to share it.

And here’s a link to the full report.

We’re so grateful to the parents and early years workers who shared their stories anonymously for the report and to researcher Verena Schneider, whose care and skill brought those voices to life.

Having said that, the dynamics within institutions ARE significant, @UKLabour Party should do some soul searching about how and why, in the 124 years since it was founded, it has only ever had a white man at the helm, as elected leader. 3/3
Kemi Badenoch being elected as the 4th woman and 1st black person to lead the UK Conservative Party is historic.
BUT let’s not get this twisted. Although representation matters, it alone is not enough. 1/3
As, Princeton Professor, @ruha9 said:
“Black faces in high places are not going to save us … that is, our blackness and our womanness are not in themselves trustworthy if we allow ourselves to be conscripted into positions of power that maintain the oppressive status quo.” 2/3
We loved having you! Big thanks to @ManduReid, @catherine_mayer and @sanditoksvig for sharing your radical optimism & exploring all we have in common - as the far right organises, progressives need to collaborate more than ever before #GPC24
Imagine if the media gave parties like ours even half of the attention they routinely give to Farage et al.
No question, we all have to keep fighting… and we will. With Reform’s surge the stakes are higher than ever.
Optimism is a political choice.

So much to say about this election, but I’ll start by saying I’m so glad we got behind @TheGreenParty!
Their phenomenal success proves that there is appetite for the truly transformative ideas that make up our joint policy platform.

HUGE congratulations from @sanditoksvig & me (& I'm sure from @ManduReid too!) to @sianberry & @TheGreenParty for a historic set of results. We were delighted to endorse your candidacy, Sian, & look forward to working on our joint policy platform with you https://t.co/xeucelBdTw
HUGE congrats from @sanditoksvig & me to @WEP_UK’s brilliant candidates @KayWesley, Harriet Williams, @hanna_000 & Nancy Cole @WEP_Wales You represented our policies & values & extended our reach, directly and through our joint policy platform with @TheGreenParty
ICYMI (easy given disproportionate coverage not only of old parties but the far right) @WEP_UK is running brilliant candidates & has a joint policy platform with @thegreenparty & @mandureid@sanditoksvig & I also back @sianberry for Brighton Pavilion
https://t.co/xeucelBdTw
I’m still on maternity leave but I took a keep in touch day last Friday to take my son to his first political meeting!
Proud to join forces with @TheGreenParty & support @sianberry’s bid to replace @CarolineLucas as MP for Brighton Pavilion.

For the final 2023 edition of The Backlash, I asked
@helenlewis, @stellacreasy, @ManduReid, @DrPragyaAgarwal, @SEMcBain, @hazard_leah, Angela Saini, and Revital Madar four key questions on feminism and the struggle for gender equality /1
The feeble political response we’ve seen so far to the urgent need to transform our childcare and early years systems tells us loud and clear that gender equality is simply not a priority for either the Tories or Labour.
@WEP_UK
Delighted to contribute to 2023’s final instalment of @paperdispatch’s excellent Substack: The Backlash
It examines the feminism, the quest for gender equality, and the backlash to both.

When I started my newsletter, I wanted to make a space for looking at gender inequality and feminism in detail, for thinking out loud about them. To wrap up 2023, I invited some of the thinkers, writers, and activists I most admire to answer 4 questions on where we are headed /1
