Harvard เคยลงเกี่ยวกับ study ว่าพวกเด็กนักเรียนที่จบจากมหาวิทยาลัยระดับ top ได้เงินเยอะกว่าพวกจบจากมหาวิทยาลัยทั่วไป แต่ performance ดีกว่ากันหรือเปล่า?

โดยได้ทำการ track performance ของเด็กจบใหม่ 28,339 คน จาก 294 มหาวิทยาลัย จาก 79 ประเทศ.. โดย 294 มหาวิทยาลัยนี้เลือกจากมหาวิทยาลัยระดับ Top 10 จนไปถึง 20,000 อันดับแรกของ Webometrics Global University Rankings

โดยให้เด็กพวกนี้ทำ business consulting ผ่าน global virtual teams

จาก study พบว่าพวกจบจากมหาวิทยาลัยอันดับสูง performance สูงกว่าพวกจบจากอันดับน้อยกว่าก็จริง แต่ไม่เยอะมาก โดย performance ดีกว่าประมาณ 1.9% ทุกๆ 1,000 ลำดับที่ต่างกัน… และ performance ต่างกัน 19% เมื่อเทียบมหาวิทยาลัยระดับ Top ของโลก กับ global average.. ซึ่ง 19% ดูเหมือนเยอะ แต่นี่คือลำดับต่างกันถึง 10,000 ลำดับ..

และจาก study พบว่าพวกจบจากมหาวิทยาลัยลำดับสูงมี performance ดีกว่าเพราะพื้นฐานเด็กพวกนี้มี cognitive abilities ที่สูงกว่าเป็นทุนเดิม (ตั้งแต่ขั้นตอนที่รับเลือกเรียนแล้ว) ได้รับการฝึกฝนมาดีกว่าเพราะมี resources และครูที่ดีกว่า, และมีการแข่งขันกันสูงกับเพื่อนๆ.. แต่ก็พบว่าพวก motivation และ work ethic ไม่มีผลจากลำดับมหาวิทยาลัย ขึ้นอยู่กับตัวบุคคล…

และพบว่าการจ้างพวกเด็กจบจสกมหาวิทยาลัยลำดับสูงก็มีข้อเสีย พวกนี้มัก focus กับงานมากเกินจนมีปัญหาความสำพันธ์กับเพื่อนร่วมงาน จนเกิด conflicts ในทีมได้

และการจ้างพวกจบจากลำดับสูงๆ ค่าแรงอาจจะสูงกว่าพวกจบจากลำดับน้อยกว่ามากถึง 108% แต่ส่วนต่าง performance ที่ได้กลับมาไม่ถือว่าคุ้ม (แต่ส่วนนี้ที่ไทยอาจจะไม่ต้องจ่ายค่าแรงต่างกันมากขนาดนี้??)

ซึ่ง study แนะนำว่าแทนที่จะเน้นไปที่การจ้างพวกจบจากที่ดังๆ ลำดับสูงๆ แต่เน้นลงทุนในเรื่อง on-the-job training คู่ไปกับการ evaluate พนักงาน จะ efficient มากกว่า
