In my concluding remarks in Durban yesterday, I reflected briefly on my leadership lessons. I’ve been in leadership positions for almost two decades and I learnt a million lessons during this time.

However, as I rose to different levels of leadership, I consistently learnt that the more powerful the position, the more powerful the enemies and detractors. I learnt, in an unkind way, that the inherent power that comes with higher levels of leadership attracts opposition from even more affluent and powerful individuals who feel threatened by change or the disruption of established systems.

To me, this emphasised the importance of being bold and resilient. No matter how painful the leadership journey was, I must say I developed a very thick skin over time. There is nothing I fear now. The leadership journey, particularly the last 4 years, taught me not to be intimidated or discouraged by even the most powerful of forces – I embrace them head-on and undeterred.
