Vodacom, the largest mobile phone company in Tanzania, said today service revenue increased by 19.4% in the year ended March 31 to TZS 1.258 trillion, driven by double-digit growth in mobile money and data.
The mobile network operator said it made an operating profit of TZS 134.3 billion in the year ended 31 March 2024, representing a growth of 64.8%
Net profit after tax rose by about 20% to TZS 53.4 billion.
The improvement in profitability was attributed to the growth in service revenue and cost containment initiatives which delivered cost savings
of more than TZS 70 billion for the company.
Vodacom Tanzania said its customer base grew 16.9% to 19.6 million in the year ended March 2024, helping it to consolidate it's 30.5% market share, ahead of rivals Tigo, Airtel and Halotel.
The number of M-Pesa mobile money customers grew 24.1% to 10.2 million, while mobile data customers grew 15.1% to 10.1 million.
"Service revenue growth was underpinned by M-Pesa and data, both delivering double-digit growth rates," said Philip Besiimire, Vodacom Tanzania's Managing Director (pictured).
"Revenue generated through our new services in M-Pesa, digital and VAS (value added services), and fixed services continued to grow, contributing 25.1% of our service revenue."
