From Jan 1, 2026, the govt has mandated that all new bikes will come with ABS and two BIS-certified helmets.

While I totally support ABS, making two helmets compulsory is pointless without addressing the root cause of people not wearing helmets.

The problem is not shortage but mindset and enforcement. Helmets are already cheap, easily available, and everyone knows they save lives; still, people don’t wear them. They won’t wear these two compulsory helmets either.

Giving a free helmet is like giving a free toothbrush and expecting cavities to disappear; it won’t. Possession doesn’t ensure practice. As long as aura, hairstyle, and the “kuch nahi hota” logic prevail, and rules are not enforced properly, the helmet will stay at home or continue to hang on the handlebar.

Without addressing the real cause, this decision will benefit only helmet companies and the govt, which will collect tax on these purchases.
