UPDATE: It’s been confirmed that Yousuf sahab has passed away in the attack. Innalilahi wa inna ilahir rajioon. His son is undergoing knee surgery, another son is in the hospital and 3 of his toes have been cut off. His daughter and wife are safe. His aunt (chachi) was with them, and suffered injuries to the head but is out of danger. I am in touch with Yousuf’s brother in law in Riyadh and the DCM has assured me that they’re taking care. @DrSJaishankar every possible assistance should be provided to the family. The family is from Mehdipatnam in Hyderabad.
The civil servants who pushed back against DOGE’s assault on the federal bureaucracy were labeled “blockers” by Elon Musk. I spoke with author Michael Lewis, who details the fascinating stories of some of those civil servants in his new book “Blockers: Rebels in the Deep State.”
I spoke with journalist @KimGhattas about the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, and about her new book “The Best Kind of American,” which chronicles the mysterious murder of an American in Lebanon in the 1980s and how that period shaped the modern Middle East:
Lot of illiterates in Journalism ... especially in video journalism ... Remembering a big goof-up during 1997 or 1998 live debate during trust vote in Parliament
Home Minister Indrajit Gupta was giving byte to media about trust vote ....
A lady journalist asked him : Sir, are you an MP?
Reply : I am not only an MP, but also Home Minister of this country...
Not naming the lady journo .... she later became PR head of a big organisation 😎
Dear President Elon,
India is a sovereign country, not your personal business project. You run a private company, not a charity.
Just because you want to enter the Indian market doesn't mean you get to mock people and lecture India on what it should do.
And please stop selling this idea that you are coming to save poor Indians. Starlink is VERY expensive. It's not free internet that you are giving away out of kindness.
You are here to do business, just like every other company. So let's not pretend this is some social service.
Nobody is stopping you from making an offer. Make it affordable, follow Indian rules, and let the government decide. That's how it works.
Please keep attitude in check, you just sell internet. You don't own India.
We’re capable of fighting our own battles @elonmusk
You’re disrespectful of laws of the land and due process.
I admired your work. Felt bad when Neil Armstrong criticized you and Space X
No longer.
It may be surprising to journalists but India is not Delhi.
Nobody cares about this protest outside of that 1km in Delhi.
It is a working Saturday.
People are going to their jobs. Folks are going to the markets to buy their groceries. Children are going to school. Kids are playing on the grounds. Restaurants expect good weekend business. Businesses have opened their shops. Festive preparations are on in full swing.
Delhi has a main-character syndrome.
Journalists think the whole country revolves around what happens in Delhi.
It doesn't.
India’s record U.S. Treasury purchases in recent months and its emergence since May as a major buyer of U.S.-sourced and U.S.-controlled energy are mutually reinforcing. Energy imports require substantial dollar liquidity, while Treasury holdings provide both liquidity and a yield-bearing asset that can help facilitate such trade.
By pivoting heavily toward U.S. energy resources, including U.S.-origin gas and U.S.-controlled Venezuelan crude oil, India is deepening its economic integration with the American financial and trade ecosystem.
At the same time, accumulating U.S. Treasuries while scaling up U.S. energy purchases provides a measure of geopolitical balance and helps reduce India’s bilateral trade imbalance with Washington.
Yet none of these steps appears to have placated the Trump administration, which continues to target India’s economic interests.
Washington’s message to India is that buying Russian oil is an unacceptable geopolitical choice that will attract punitive tariffs of up to 100% under the new Graham Act. But Washington’s message to itself is that importing Russian diesel is acceptable when American consumers need cheaper fuel.
When India invokes its national interest, Washington calls it sanctions evasion. When Washington invokes its own national interest, it calls it pragmatism.
While seeking to force India to bear the economic costs of America’s Russia policy, it is simultaneously exempting American consumers from those same costs when they become politically painful.
It doesn’t matter to Washington that India, the world’s third largest energy importer, has an obligation, too, to secure affordable and reliable energy for its consumers.
Mr. Musk, yes, no billionaire should dictate a nation’s policy - Indian or American.
India must welcome competition in satellite internet, from Indian and global providers, whoever offers the most practical and affordable last-mile solution for those in remote regions. In countries with lower per-capita incomes, satellite internet must be affordable too. High subscription fees and equipment costs risk putting it beyond the reach of ordinary households. Connectivity must bridge the digital divide, not create a new one.
India knows our networks and spectrum are strategic infrastructure, not merely commercial assets. India’s national security safeguards are non-negotiable.
Every country makes choices based on its own interests. Those in the West cannot preach free markets while practicing protectionism at home. USA imposed 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs to protect its domestic industry, just as India takes measures to protect its own domestic manufacturers. Both India and the US have restricted Huawei over security concerns. One cannot demand a level playing field from others only when it suits its own agenda.
Indians will internally debate, question and address our strengths and shortcomings as a democratic country.
Take BharatNet, India’s programme to bring broadband to village-level local bodies. We will question why, as the CAG’s 2026 audit report found, the programme is struggling to meet its original objectives. Why were only 33.2% of service-ready Gram Panchayats operational, despite ₹39,888 crore being spent? At the same time, we know to appreciate our telecom sector and regulations, which has made internet data among the world’s most affordable, bringing millions online.
India is a democracy, not a colony. We welcome the world, but we, the Indian people, will decide our own future - not Western vested interests, their double standards or any billionaire - Indian or American.
The right to protest must be protected, but so must the right of a city to function safely.
Responsible policing is about balancing both.

Ambition is a right; national interest is a responsibility. Everyone has the right to aspire to be Prime Minister, but India first.
National interest above political ambition.
