India, imagine spending 2 years and ₹6 lakh just to get a driving licence.

That was my struggle in Norway. In 2011, I spent around ₹6 lakh. Today, it would probably be more than ₹10 lakh.

When I came here in 2011, I realised quickly that you really need to drive here - snow, mountains, cold weather and long distances.

I started with a neighbour helping me.

But the licence was a serious process: mandatory courses, theory test, safety training and many hours of practice. Your supervisor needed 5+ years of driving experience.

I drove through snow, mountains, tunnels, highways and small roads. Driving schools charged by the hour, and you kept practising until they believed you were ready.

Then came the final test - almost an hour with the driving authority, through traffic, tunnels and mountain roads.

I failed. 😄

Practised for another two months and passed the second time.

Almost 2 years of struggle for one licence.

Looking back, I understand why.

They were not just testing whether I could drive a car. They were testing whether I could safely share the road with other people’s lives.

And this is where I think about India.

Why do we see so much pain from road accidents - injuries, hospital bills, families losing their savings, and lives lost?

Some were just walking on the road.

Some were driving carefully, but an irresponsible driver took their life.

Could part of it be that we simply don’t make people work hard enough to earn the right to drive?

Maybe a licence should not just prove that you can move a car.

It should prove that you can handle a life-threatening responsibility.

If we are to truly compete in the AI era, we need sweeping deregulation and a Big Bang slashing of anything that could lead to unnecessary harassment.

@urbancompany_UC paid 3k 1st time for gas refill & servicing, the AC stopped cooling within a month. Your technician replaced the whole cooling coil at another 5k even though previous job was under 3 month warranty & now the AC has stopped cooling again, horrible standards UC!

Daily drive to school with my granddaughter reveal a hard truth. Educated, affluent drivers ignore traffic lights and drive on the wrong side. Some stop at the canal to toss plastic waste into the water.
Wealth and education have not created civic sense. To live here, you must build a private cocoon of safety and order. Becoming Vishwavuru remains a distant dream when the basics of shared respect fail every morning.
