On Jan 7, 2024, a Muslim woman and a Hindu man couple checked into a hotel in Hangal, Karnataka.

Likely tipped off by hotel staff, a group of men from the woman’s community soon barged into their room, assaulted them, and filmed the incident. The attackers then allegedly took the woman to a secluded spot, where she was gangraped.

19 were arrested. 12 got bail earlier; the remaining 7 secured it recently. After release, they joined a celebratory procession from the sub-jail to Akki Alur with over 25 vehicles, music, slogans, and victory signs, receiving a hero’s welcome from their supporters.

Not surprisingly, the "love knows no religion" brigade stayed largely silent. They invoke love to downplay cases where women are deceived by hiding religion, but here, a consensual interfaith couple faced moral policing and gangrape, yet drew little support.

To grasp the apathy, consider this: if someone like Swara today shares a tweet from a random anonymous account claiming she’s being harassed for marrying a Muslim, she’d receive thousands of times more support than this real victim has.

🚨 Trigger warning: Today, I had gone for a morning jog in a government garden in Kandivali.
There were RSS people doing prayers. I was asked to not jog in a GOVERNMENT ground. I didn't acknowledge and continued my jog. 4-5 people came behind me with sticks and tried beating me. When I stopped not a single person had the guts to actually beat me. I was asked my name and when I told them my name their response was "ye to apne hi log hai inko nahi marna. Muslim hote to abhi maar dete"

The kind of hate this country is seeing is unimaginable. Firstly, I was running on my own. I wasn't disturbing any of them. It was a government ground, which is free for all. And thirdly, just my name saved me today.
