How does a country make itself safe and productive?

Great Britain did it with Christianity—and by executing or imprisoning the worst males in every generation for hundreds of years.

By the 1960s, the country was so civilized that policeman carried nothing but a nightstick, everybody queued without a second thought, and newspaper boxes were left unlocked on the high street.

Britain had become a so-called high trust society — less euphemistically, an honest society.

Something similar—without the Christianity—transpired in Japan.

What happens to such a country if it forgets how difficult that was to attain?

For the last couple of months the Opportunity Party has been promoting a key aspect of their “smart on Crime” policy: “raise the age of the youth court jurisdiction to 25.”

That specific number has now just… disappeared from their website. No statement. No explanation. Nothing. It’s simply gone.

This is from the party that constantly lectures everyone about “the courage to change” and how we all need to face the uncomfortable realities instead of ducking them.

Yet the second that policy started looking soft on crime and made them an easy target, threatening their tilt at 5%, they scrubbed it.

Unless of course, the evidence miraculously shifted in the last fortnight?

So what is the magic number supposed to be now?

TOP can’t spend months selling themselves as the honest, evidence-based alternative to the usual political games and then quietly delete a key pillar of policy the moment it becomes inconvenient and awkward.

That’s not courage. It’s cowardice.

PILLAR is strongly opposing renewed calls to introduce hate speech laws in New Zealand, saying the proposals are nothing more than a modern attempt to reintroduce blasphemy laws under a different name.

Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) chair Abdul Razzaq has again called for hate speech legislation, proposing definitions that would prohibit speech deemed to “vilify or promote hostility” towards individuals or communities based on their religion.

PILLAR Executive Director and spokesperson Nathan Seiuli said New Zealanders should recognise exactly what is being proposed.

“Let’s call this what it is. These are blasphemy laws dressed up in modern language.”

“No religion, ideology or belief system should be protected from criticism, ridicule, scrutiny or robust public debate. In a free society, ideas don’t have rights. People do.”

Seiuli said New Zealand has already rejected hate speech laws multiple times, with successive governments backing away from proposals after overwhelming public opposition.

“New Zealanders have consistently made their position clear. We do not want the government deciding which opinions are acceptable and which are criminal.”

“Freedom of expression is not a privilege granted by politicians. It is a fundamental right that underpins every other freedom we enjoy.”

PILLAR warned that hate speech laws inevitably expand beyond their original intent, creating uncertainty about what people can say and encouraging political censorship.

“Around the world we’ve seen these laws weaponised against political opponents, religious minorities, journalists, activists and ordinary citizens. Once government gains the power to police opinions, that power never remains narrowly confined.”

Seiuli said while genuine threats, harassment and incitement to violence are already illegal under New Zealand law, criminalising offensive or controversial opinions crosses a dangerous constitutional line.

“If someone threatens violence, prosecute them. If someone commits harassment, prosecute them. But don’t criminalise peaceful speech simply because somebody finds it offensive.”

“The answer to bad ideas has never been government censorship. The answer is better ideas, open debate and the freedom to challenge one another.”

Seiuli said renewed calls for hate speech laws reinforce why organisations like PILLAR exist.

“If organisations like PILLAR don’t occupy the public square defending liberty, someone else will occupy it arguing for censorship.”

“History is littered with examples of governments restricting speech in the name of safety, harmony or public order. Those restrictions rarely remain limited, and they almost always come at the expense of individual liberty.”

“New Zealand does not need hate speech laws. It does not need blasphemy laws. It needs the courage to defend freedom of speech, especially when that speech is unpopular.”

I am deeply disgusted and appalled by the University of Auckland.

In their new Department of Cancer Sciences — heavily funded by New Zealand taxpayers — they are calling for expressions of interest in an Associate Head Māori role.

Cancer doesn't discriminate — it devastates New Zealanders of every race and background.

Yet this department, focused on cancer research, education, and clinical practice, is prioritising race-based leadership to "embed Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Mātauranga Māori, and equity principles."

They want strategic Māori leadership, partnerships with iwi, kaupapa Māori approaches, and a "mana-enhancing" environment — all while the disease itself demands the best science, not racial positions.

This is offensive, morally bankrupt, and a betrayal of patients fighting for their lives.

Taxpayers should not be funding separatism and identity politics in life-saving cancer research and care.

It puts identity politics ahead of merit, excellence, and equal care for all Kiwis.

Enough of this divisive agenda in our universities and health sciences.

We need one standard for all New Zealanders — no race-based roles in cancer care or research.

Garnet Harper, a 35-year-old father of five beautiful children, was denied a life-saving kidney transplant in Ontario, solely because he wasn’t vaccinated against COVID. 💔😔

Despite two of his brothers volunteering to donate, no doctor or hospital would perform the surgery.

Garnet tragically passed away on May 22, leaving behind his wife of 12 years and their five children.

While he was fighting for his life in the hospital, staff even asked his wife if they could harvest his organs after he died.

The system deemed him unworthy of a transplant while alive… but worthy as an organ donor once dead.

Why deny a living man a transplant because he wasn’t vaccinated… but happily harvest his organs the moment he dies?

This is heartbreaking and wrong on every level. 💔
